Think It-Make It with 3D Printing
Only found out now that the library can do 3D printing.
3D Printing Service Now Available for all
VIRL Branches
At the Creativity Commons, there have been
some great 3D prints being made for customers
and now we’re opening this service to all
39 VIRL branches!
Send us a .STL file to cc@virl.bc.ca with your
branch details, preferred filament colour, and
anything we might need to know about your
file. Staff in the Creativity Commons will assess
the file to ensure it fits within our 6-hour max
printing window and connect with you about any
issues. It’ll take 1-2 weeks for us to print your
file, apply quarantine procedures, and ship to
your branch for pickup. Printing costs $0.10/gram.
Once your file is ready, Creativity Commons
staff will let you know when your print has
shipped to your branch. Your local branch staff
will then connect with you to arrange a pick-up.

Library’s Virtual Gardening Workshops

Library Services in the
New Normal

We are getting closer to the resumption of some
in-branch services at VIRL and are very hopeful
that physical items may soon start circulating
again in communities across our service area.

VIRL will undertake a phased approach to the
resumption of library services. We are currently in
Phase 1 with all branches and offices closed and
services being offered online.

Phase 2 will commence the week of June 1 with curbside service for books, DVDs, and other physical materials at some locations and proceeding to more service locations in the days that follow. Customers will also be able to return checked out items during the curbside hours of operation. For the time being, collections will be limited to those titles available at each specific branch.
All items will be quarantined for 72 hours between loans.
More information about additional phases will be provided as it becomes available.
At the same time as these plans are underway, staff are also engaged in bringing more Alternate Services to our customers, including:
- Email Information service – started
- Phone Information service – starts the week of May 25
- Virtual Appointments for tech help or research assistance – starts the week of May 25
- Online programming, such as Storytimes, Book clubs, and Skills-building – Starts soon
I’m sure you share my excitement to be progressing in this manner for our communities. As always, we are basing our decisions around health and safety, and will ensure that all proper procedures, training, and equipment are in place before any branch services are resumed.

VIRL’s future plans
Expanded services
In the coming days, more services are coming to help VIRL customers stay connected and informed.
Customers with questions about VIRL’s digital tools, resources, and databases will be able to set up virtual appointments with staff over the phone, email, or web-based platform to have their questions addressed. Expanded email and telephone service will also allow staff to engage more quickly and thoroughly with customers.
Online programming, including Storytimes, books clubs, learning opportunities, and more, are in the pipeline and nearing implementation.
Looking ahead
A recently formed Renewal and Recovery Taskforce will develop a strategy and roadmap for how VIRL can resume offering in-branch services to customers. All decisions will be driven by the direction and guidance of health authorities.
In recent days, a number of library systems in BC have begun rolling out curbside pick-up of physical materials and VIRL has heard from a growing number of customers who are hungry for books. The models being implemented by other systems will be carefully reviewed by the taskforce, among other ideas and plans put forth by team members and other library systems.
“We understand just how important libraries are to so many in our communities,” says Melissa Legacy, VIRL’s Director of Library Services and Planning. “Whether it’s providing books to families, combatting social isolation for seniors, or offering a safe and welcoming space to people in need, libraries mean so much to so many and we are committed to providing services and supports to our communities as soon as it is safe to do so.”
As a regional system covering almost 45,000 square kilometres — including a mix of urban, rural, and remote branches — VIRL has unique challenges, considerations, and opportunities that the taskforce will consider. There is no one-size-fits-all model VIRL reopening our branches, but all options are on the table as the taskforce arrives at its recommendations. While it is too soon to pin a timeline to the resumption of in-branch services, VIRL is committed to bringing services back to our communities with health and safety as the number one consideration.

As a result of the closures, VIRL has extended all due
