 The Conuma Grill at Moutcha Bay Resort is open. We will be open 7 days a week:

Breakfast - 8AM to 10AM

Lunch & Dinner - 12PM to 8:30PM (last call for food at 8PM)

Hours will extend as we get later in the season. Come have some cold beers, tasty food and PIZZA.

Please be advised of Road Construction Activities taking place between 43km and 44km on the Head Bay FSR between Gold River and Tahsis. Works will be taking place from June 9-30, 2025. There will be a bypass in place for traffic to safely pass, there will still be occasional delays of up to 1 hour. Please share with your contacts that may be affected by these activities.

ACTIONS TO TAKE

• Please follow all traffic signs and laws.
• Slow down in the affected area and take extra precautions.
  
• Plan for up to 1 hour delays
• Follow the direction of the local authorities.

DESCRIPTION

EFFECTIVE NOON (PDT) FRIDAY MAY 30, 2025

ALL Category 2 & Category 3 open fires will be prohibited across the Coastal Fire Centre jurisdiction including The Village of Tahsis. 

NO Burning Permits will be issued. 

"category 2 open fire" which means an open fire, other than a category 1 campfire, that

1. burns material in one pile not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width,
2. burns material concurrently in 2 piles each not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width, or
3. burns stubble or grass over an area that does not exceed 0.2 ha.

"category 3 open fire" which means an open fire that burns

1. material concurrently in 3 or more piles each not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width,
2. material in one or more piles each exceeding 2 m in height or 3 m in width,
3. one or more windrows, each not exceeding 200 m in length or 15 m in width,
4. stubble or grass over an area exceeding 0.2 ha.

ALSO PROHIBITED are the activities listed below (Wildfire Act, Section 12):

• Fireworks;
• Sky Lanterns;
• Binary Exploding Targets;
• Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description; and,
• Air Curtain Burners.

This prohibition does not apply to Category 1 - Campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, or to cooking stoves that use gas, propane, or briquettes.

Anyone lighting a campfire must maintain a fireguard by removing flammable debris from around the campfire area and have a hand tool or at least eight litres of water available nearby to properly extinguish the fire.

The Coastal Fire Centre covers all the area west of the height of land on the Coast Mountain Range from the U.S.-Canada border at Manning Park, including Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park in the north, the Sunshine Coast, the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and Haida Gwaii.

Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

 Sad to say, The Local market stand by the post office has to close down. In the last two weeks, there have been 7 jars of jam stolen. We have no reserve to cover vendor’s losses. It lasted a good long while but it’s no longer an honesty box.

Mayor’s May reports

 Just to keep us all better informed, I’m going to post the Mayor’s meeting reports so all can catch up.

May 6, 2025

On the 24th, I attended the Municipal Finance Authority AGM in Victoria, representing Strathcona Regional District. At the AGM we vote in trustees for the coming year. The MFA provides low interest loans to municipalities across BC and we have used its services over the years. It has a triple-A credit rating. There was an excellent seminar  about the changing global economy and implications of the Trump tariffs. There was also a talk by Chantal Hebert (political analyst and blogger) in which she correctly called the national election results before they occurred.

On the 30th I attended a regional district committee of the whole which was intended to work out differences in an environment where we are not trying to get through an agenda.  The results?  We will see.

I am sorry to hear that Dave Macintosh has passed away.  He was mayor of Tahsis from 2005-8. Dave was a generous man, always willing to help people out.  He was also a frequent visitor to the Ocean View Cafe where we had many conversations about Tahsis and a better way forward. He will be missed.

I would like to congratulate Doctor Jim Halvorson from Tahsis for his recognition with  
the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada. The society proudly recognizes individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to rural medicine in Canada.
At their 32nd Annual Rural and Remote Medicine Conference—held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Friday, April 25, 2025, Dr. Jim Halvorson was honoured with THREE National Awards this year - The only member to receive triple recognition. The presentation took place during the conference banquet and was hosted by SRPC President Dr. Gavin Parker and Dr. Gabe Woollam, Chair of the Nominations and Awards Committee.

“It is a true privilege to recognize this year’s award recipients. Across rural and remote communities, physicians continue to provide outstanding care, often in demanding and resource-limited environments. These awards honour individuals whose work reflects the core values of rural medicine—clinical excellence, leadership, mentorship, community involvement, and a deep commitment to service. Each year, we are inspired by their achievements and proud to share and celebrate their contributions.” 
– Dr. Gabe Woollam, Chair, Nominations and Awards Committee.

Today, I met with RCMP Island District managers to discuss services in our region and issues for our community. I was happy for their outreach.
