Tahsis Highlighted in Photo Life Article

Congratulations to Troy Moth, a new Tahsis resident, on the publication of his article in the Feb/March issue of Photo Life magazine!  I happened to be in Victoria on the weekend and picked up a couple of copies at Bolen Books.  One will be at the library if you want to take a look.  We are fortunate to have new people coming to Tahsis with big creative ideas to inspire and grow our community.  Can't wait to see what happens next!  Troy takes beautiful photographs and has great advice in the article titled:

CMESS Acknowledges Anti-bullying Pink Shirt Day

The students and staff gathered together to hear grade 11 students Andie and Marion speak about the origins and meaning behind Pink Shirt Day, the anti bullying movement that originated from students in a Canadian school, but is now an international event.  Each kid then customized a pink shirt poster with a personal message to display in the hall.

The staff and students work very hard at CMESS to preserve the climate of respectful inclusiveness and the celebration of diversity, and our little school enjoys a reputation of having kind, thoughtful and supportive kids, who love to engage with people from all walks of life or circumstance.  This is no fluke, this is due to the tireless efforts of the staff, who provide examples and guidance, teaching our students to be empathetic global citizens, as they grow and learn.

Water Colour Classes begins

Thanks to Alice M. for starting the water colour classes, sponsored by the Tahsis Literacy Society!  12 people were at the first class on Tuesday night at CMESS, and everyone enjoyed the opportunity to learn some water colour techniques, from beginners to pros who were just there to enjoy!  Can't wait to see what we come up with as the weeks go by.

Lend a Hand at the Tahsis Community Garden

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

The Farm to School garden plot needs to be prepared for Spring planting for the school’s soup and salad program.

This will involve moving soil with shovels and a wheelbarrow, and some simple carpentry. Raised beds will be oriented for optimum sun exposure and one bed will be dedicated as a perennial Asparagus Patch.  Forty five asparagus crowns are coming sometime in March, so we could really use some help.

Community members, older students or parents who are able to pitch in and help for a half day, please call Terry Fassbender at 6460. A strong back is helpful. Terry will coordinate a (sunny) day that works for everyone.

And, a heartfelt thanks to Karli Yanchus, Tahsis Farm to School Coordinator, for providing funds for the F2S asparagus crowns.

Tahsis Building Supply Earns an Award

Congratulations to the owners and staff of Tahsis Building Supply, who have just received the Building Supply Industry Association of BC 2016 Orion Award, competing with hardware stores all over Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.  The award is based on the evaluation of secret shoppers, testing the store staff on customer service, staff product knowledge and store merchandising.

We all have had experiences where our friends at Tahsis Building Supply have gone over and above to support the residents of Tahsis, not just as a retail business, but as a community minded hub of communication, cooperation and support.  It's always a pleasure to "Shop Local".

From promoting the latest children's fundraiser, bringing in that specific piece you need to fix your plumbing problem, (or your whole new roof, for that matter!), ensuring your courier package makes it into your hands, delivering cumbersome merchandise right to your door, and making sure there is a cookie available for your dog when he follows you in, TBS has always represented what is the best of living in a small town with a great community spirit.

Often when there is a question anywhere in Tahsis, the answer is "Ask at the Building Supply!"  "Talk to Tony and Judy!"  or "Allison will help you out!"

Thank you and congratulations!  Well deserved.

Allison Stiglitz with owners Judy and Tony Ellis

Local Musicians Perform

What a treat to enjoy some local musicians last night at Sally's Grill!  Presented by the new music label Nootka Sounds, musicians Venadito, Freewill, Wolf~Loup opened with jazz inspired ambient music and then featured the folk music of Sierra Jannise with Dorian Mayer.  The appreciative crowd of all ages enjoyed both the original music and the cover songs.  My personal favourite was Sierra's original song called "Tahsis Bound".

The Great Walk 2018

There is a poll that the organizers of the Great Walk want you to fill out, if you are interested in walking or volunteering the Great Walk in June 2018.  Please take the time to fill it out.

Here is the link: The Great Walk

Here are some photos from the Great Walk 2012

Information from the website:

"The GREAT WALK, is an annual fund raising event sponsored by the Tahsis Lions Club. This event takes place between Gold River and Tahsis, British Columbia,Canada.

It takes place on 63.5 kilometres of gravel logging road between Gold River and Tahsis, on Vancouver Island. It covers what we believe to be some of the most rugged and beautiful country in the world. For a look at the elevation profile of the Great Walk route please click here.

Great Walkers have raised more than $1,000,000.00 for many worthy charities. Walkers choose to solicit sponsors for the recognized charity or organization of their choice; others just walk for the challenge.

The GREAT WALK starts at 4:00 AM near Gold River and is officially ends sixteen hours later in Tahsis at 8:00 PM. (Note: We reserve the right to pick up and bring in any walkers not recorded in by 8:00 PM.)

All walkers receive a GREAT WALK T-shirt for making it halfway (Checkpoint 6) and the coveted Burning Boot Award for completing the route.

There are a total of twelve check-points along the way, offering refreshments, drinks, first aid, and moral support! Road monitors are constanly travelling between check-points to maintain the safety and support of all participants.

Special trophies are presented at the awards ceremony that start at 8:30 PM. Ground transportation between Gold River and Tahsis is available, at additional cost, before and after the GREAT WALK.

Toonies for Tummies at Save On Foods

In Tahsis, at Captain Meares Elementary Secondary School we are fortunate to have a volunteer run Breakfast Club of Canada program, offering free meals every school day morning.  When kids have the extra security of knowing there's always a little something to eat whenever they need it at school, they feel better, learn better and behave better.  Remote rural isolated small towns will always have food security issues, but here in Tahsis we work to improve our situations as best we can.

"green eggs" and ham

our most common and popular food, smoothies!

Our breakfast club is mostly funded by Breakfast Club of Canada, and they are partnering up with Save On Foods for a great fundraiser this month.  Starting today, and running until the 23rd of February, customers at participating Save-on locations (including the Save on Foods in Campbell River!) will be asked to donate $2 to the Toonies for Tummies campaign.

100% of these funds will go towards supporting Breakfast Club of Canada schools.
