SRD RECEIVES $180,00 GRANT TO ENHANCE EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS

Campbell River, BC – The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) has received a grant through the 2022 Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) grant to install tsunami warning sirens, enhance radio communication capacity, provide backup power and procure mobile EOC kits.

 

“This regional grant was made possible through partnership between the SRD, five municipalities and three First Nations.” said SRD Chair Brad Unger. “Through engagement with staff and emergency program volunteers we were able to construct a proposal that best met the needs of all communities involved.  I would like to thank everyone who provided their valuable input and local knowledge to guide us on our path to a successful application”.

 

The primary component of this grant application will be the installation of 5 tsunami warning sirens.

“Tsunamis are one of the most destructive events triggered by Mother Nature, these extremely powerful tidal waves are capable of crushing everything found in their path. This grant complements the achievements of our recent tsunami mapping initiative and helps us realize our consistent commitment to enhancing the safety of our west coast communities to this hazard” said SRD Protective Services Coordinator Shaun Koopman. “Fair Harbour and the Gold River estuary areas will each receive their first tsunami siren. Secondary sirens will be installed in Zeballos, Tahsis and Walter’s Island to enhance the coverage of the primary siren already in those communities.”

 

The following projects will also be undertaken under this grant:

• Installing a Radio Over Internet Protocol (ROIP) to enhance communications between the Oclucje, Zeballos and Campbell River areas
• Installing a high frequency (HF) radio antenna in Tahsis
• Installing very high frequency (VHF) antennas in Sayward
• Providing additional emergency operation centre mobile kits to the City of Campbell River
• Installing a generator at Ehattesaht Chinehkint First Nation to provide backup power to their community buildings

Coastal Fire Centre enacts fire ban starting Friday

 Starting on July 15 at noon, most open burning will be banned in the Coastal Fire Centre in order to reduce the risk of wildfires.

The ban applies to category two and three fires, and the prohibition will be in place until Oct. 28.

Category two fires include open fires, other than campfires that:

• burns material in one pile not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width,
• burns material concurrently in 2 piles each not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width, or
• burns stubble or grass over an area that does not exceed 0.2 ha. 
• 
  
• Category three fires include open fires that burns:
• • material concurrently in 3 or more piles each not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width,
  • material in one or more piles each exceeding 2 m in height or 3 m in width,
  • one or more windrows, or
  • stubble or grass over an area exceeding 0.2 ha.

  Fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description; and, air curtain burners are also banned.

  
  

  Campfires – which are fires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller – and cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes are not affected by these fire bans.

  “Anyone lighting a campfire must maintain a fireguard by removing flammable debris from around the campfire area and have a hand tool or at least eight litres of water available nearby to properly extinguish the fire,” the Coastal Fire Centre says in a release.

  “Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.”

Dock plans

 For those who were unable to attend last week’s open house and presentation, attached are renderings of the option approved by Council for this project which is 100% funded under the Canada/British Columbia Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.  Project budget is $2,475,547.

Thank you to Celebrate Canada for the funding, Village of Tahsis for organizing it, Tahsis Heritage society for hosting the Trivia Contest, Tahsis Literacy for sponsoring the prizes, the Screaming Meadows for playing their music, Allison for photographing at the photo booth, and any other volunteers who helped make the event a success! It’s awesome to be able to have these community events again.
