Tahsis is a remote village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With only 400 residents, we don't have many of the conveniences of larger towns but we do have community spirit and lots to do in our spectacularly wild and beautiful environment.

Wildberry Festival
On Monday night, over 65 people of all ages joined friends and neighbours for a celebration of local food, namely our lovely Tahsis wildberries. There were several treats to choose from, and everyone enjoyed themselves. Thank you to the many volunteers who contributed berries, equipment, recipes and hard work prepping for this fun and free event in our school kitchen. Thank you to Breakfast Club of Canada who provided the grant money for us to get some much needed equipment for the school, and the ingredients for all our treats.

Thanksgiving 2015 in Esperanza
We didn't have sunshine, but we had family, friends, neighbours, wildlife, songs, stories, prizes, and a delicious feast yesterday as we visited Esperanza for Thanksgiving. Over 100 people travelled from Zeballos, Tahsis, Gold River, and even a few from as far away as Victoria to enjoy the holiday.
Chef Gerry Boy and his helpers put out an amazing spread, with turkey, ham, potatoes that I watched being mashed with the biggest industrial masher I've ever seen (what a workout!), gravy, cranberry sauce, and everyone else brought potluck sides and desserts. It was lovely!
The whales were in the inlet, we could hear and see them spouting in the distance. The kids ran around and enjoyed themselves on the paths and swings, amidst the free range chickens and dogs. It's easy to be truly thankful when surrounded by the beautiful, generous and friendly community at Esperanza, who invite everyone every year to visit and share the holiday.

Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Society Work in the Rivers
The Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Society is having a busy season, giving Mother Nature a boost, and ensuring that we have more salmon in our ocean. This is the time of year that the salmon are spawning, so in order to increase the numbers, the volunteers catch breeding stock and harvest the eggs and sperm, then incubate the fertilized eggs at the hatchery, doing more work to count, document and track them. Once they are vaccinated and weighing about 5 grams, they are released into the ocean.
Last week they were able to fertilize 200 000 Chinook eggs, which is a hugely successful number, increased from 68 000 last year.
There are 1 and half billion salmon are released into the pacific ocean every year from hatcheries, Usually they are chum salmon, and mostly from Korea and Japan, but Tahsis does it's part, and every fish counts!
250 Tahsis River fish returned this fall, and 800 returned to the Leiner River, thanks to the Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Society volunteers!
