I ran into the little one who was attacked by a cougar last week. She's happy and healthy and cute as a button. I think the whole town breathed a sigh of relief for this family!
Tahsis is a remote village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With only 400 residents, we don't have many of the conveniences of larger towns but we do have community spirit and lots to do in our spectacularly wild and beautiful environment.

CMESS Students return from NSOP Trip
What a great classroom! Photo from Nootka Sound Outdoor Program |
6 CMESS senior high school students returned last night from a weekend orientation trip for the Nootka Sound Outdoor Program. Joining 15 students from Gold River, they spent time on Quadra Island, mostly at Camp Homewood. They enjoyed the challenges of canoeing, horseback riding, archery, riflery, and hiking. This program is run by Phil Parkes out of Gold River. For more information, check out the NSOP Facebook Page.
What a unique opportunity our students have, to step out of the traditional classroom and expand their horizons in our beautiful surroundings.

Cougar Attack in Tahsis
From: CTV Vancouver Island
Published Monday, September 21, 2015 5:03PM PDT
"A young cougar has been destroyed after pouncing on a two-year-old girl in her own backyard in a remote community on the west coast of Vancouver Island.
The attack happened at around 12:30 p.m. Monday at a property in the town of Tahsis, B.C., according to the BC Conservation Officer Service.
“Our understanding is that the child was just outside in her yard with her parents in close proximity, and the cougar just attacked her there,” said Sgt. Ben York.
The father immediately jumped in to pull the cougar off his daughter, and beat the animal back with his bare hands, he said.
The child was rushed to hospital and treated for some scratches and teeth marks, but was otherwise miraculously unharmed and released from care shortly after.
“I think it in large part had to do with her parents being so close and her dad being willing to have a good, strong right hook,” York said.
The first conservation officer to respond found a cougar near the scene and destroyed the animal.
Police also attended, and trained hounds were used to sniff out any other cougars in the area.
York said it appeared to be a young cat that could possibly still belong to a family, or was just dispersing from its family unit.
He said it’s not unusual to see cougars or bears in Tahsis, but there haven’t been any recent reports of animal attacks".

House Fire
Thanks to the Tahsis Volunteer Firefighters for responding quickly and keeping this devastating fire contained, when called out at 3 am this morning. The man who lived here got out ok.
Uchuck Visit
MV Uchuck III visited Tahsis Friday night, and dropped off 30 passengers to enjoy
evening supper and live music at Westview Marina. Guests also shopped at the Tahsis Artisans' Co-op and toured the local museum before turning in for the night. They had breakfast on the ship and left at 10 am Saturday morning to visit Yuquot (Friendly Cove) before returning to Gold River.

New Date for Seniors Society Flea Market
Because of the scheduled power interruption on October 3, the Seniors' Society
moved the date of the flea market coming up to October 10th.
New poster:
2015 CMESS Back to School BBQ
All over the world people come together to share food and celebrate community, and Tahsis is no exception as over 60 people gathered to enjoy free hot dogs, hamburgers, coleslaw and veggies (and kale chips from Sarah!) at the school kitchen. I volunteered along with Janet, Paul and Casey, and with all the staff of CMESS to serve the friends, family and neighbours of the school, while the principal ran the grill. We were a bit cooped up because of the much needed rain, but a good time was had by all. It was especially fun to welcome several newcomers to our town and welcome back a few that had spent time away.

Tahsis Artisans' Co-op Last Chance of the Season
The Tahsis Artisans' Co-op has had a tremendous season, we enjoyed meeting visitors from all over the world, and sharing our pride in our local Tahsis artists.
For one final chance, we will be opening Friday Night from 4 pm to 8 pm, to join Westview Marina in hosting some travellers arriving on the Uchuck. All are welcome!
(The Co-op is located in the hall of St. Joseph's Church, on the hill above the marina)

Local Tuna
Rumour has it, there's a sign down on the government dock that there's a tuna boat docked and they are willing to sell tuna for $2.25/lb. Great opportunity to can your own! According to well, everyone who has any experience, this tastes 100 times better than the stuff we get at the store.
I'm not sure how long the ship is staying, so it's a good idea to check it out sooner rather than later.

1st Day of School
School's in! Welcome to all newcomers and returning students and staff at Captain Meares Elementary Secondary School!
There seem to be a lot of bear sightings right now in town so make sure you are giving the mom and cubs lots of room and not attracting them with garbage! We are so lucky to live in a place where we can see these beautiful creatures, but we don't want to get them into trouble!

Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Society and Westview Marina Fishing Derby
Despite incredibly harsh stormy weather, (I heard stories of taking refuge in Kyuquot, and braving 15 foot waves) a fuel shortage in Esperanza, and no running water for part of the weekend in Tahsis, the sportfishers who took part in the Salmon Derby last weekend had a wonderful time and showed unprecedented generosity for a good cause.
"It's all about the fish!" was the catch phrase of the weekend. Between the registration fees, the silent auction, the live auction and the other various donations, the hardworking staff, volunteers and participants raised over $36 000 for the Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Society.

A donation for the auction, a valuable collection of fly ties by the family of the late Paul Fletcher, who was a great supporter of the Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Society. |
