Community Garden sign up this Sunday

 

This Sunday, March 26 from 10:30 to 12:30 at the Senior Centre, Tahsis Community Garden Society is having a sign up day. It’s well worth joining.

For $20 you get a 4x8 foot bed. For $10 you get a tabletop smaller bed. There are also beds available in the greenhouse for starting seedlings or for growing delicate plants. If money is a problem, there is some support available.  That’s your only expense except for seeds which you can find in abundance at the Tahsis Building Supply.

You’ll get a gardening spot with good sun, good source of water and a high fence to keep the deer away. You’ll work with a group of talented gardeners who can help you solve problems. In this time of high grocery prices, you’ll grow your own food. All in all, it’s just a beautiful place to hang out.

In addition to current members, this meeting is open to anyone wishing to join the group and all members of the public. Please come and check out all the work that has been happening in the garden and find out what the TCG is all about.

Native Plants Presentation

(from Silvie Keen) On Saturday, April 13th, the Tahsis Community Garden Society  welcomed biologist Todd Carnahan to Tahsis.   That afternoon, Todd did a walk-around at our community garden  with eight garden members.  Under the shelter of large umbrellas,  we discussed invasive species (blackberries), food sources  (poplar trees!), the importance of recognizing our unique and rich  environment, soil erosion as it relates to salmon habitat, and wildlife  interactions.   At the evening presentation ‘Gardening with Native Plants’, Todd’s knowledge, humour and suggestions were very well received by all those in attendance.  Todd shared many outstanding photographs including photos of the edible Camas lily, Oregon grape and the four varieties of wild crab apples – some of which may be found around our Leiner Estuary.   To view Todd’s photos, visit his website Todd Carnahan Photography.   It was interesting to hear how the indigenous peoples harvested, nurtured and preserved edible plants for untold generations; a matriarchal passing of knowledge.   Living in an area rich in natural resources from the land and sea, natives had a very different way of cultivating food than the European practices with which we are more familiar.  Participants learned that the bumble bee is superior to the honey bee in terms of pollination, and that the top three plants for pollinators are lavender, rhododendron and white clover.  Heather provides good, early season blooms for bees, and beneficial flowers of asters and goldenrod make a stunning colour presentation of blue and gold. The topic of invasive plants was touched upon, with examples such as broom and the evil tansy ragwort.  Todd suggested a visit to the Invasive Species Council of BC website, https://bcinvasives.ca/ as a great resource about invasive species, and best practices for dealing with them.   Of special note, Todd brought with him a very old nautical chart of Kyuquot Sound.  He presented it as a gift to the Tahsis Heritage Society, who were exceptionally pleased.  To end his visit to Tahsis, Heritage Society directors Maureen Roth and Judy Burgess gave Todd and his companion a private tour of the museum on Sunday.  When the Tahsis Museum re-opens this summer, be sure to stop in to view this chart from 1863.   We are very grateful to Todd Carnahan for making this trip up to Tahsis, and offer sincere thanks to the Tahsis Literacy Society for funding the event, to the Tahsis Seniors Centre for making their facilities available, to the volunteers of the Tahsis Community Garden Society who organized the event, and to the villagers of Tahsis who came out on a blustery Spring night to attend the presentation.   Thanks all, and happy gardening.

Gardening with Native Plants workshop

This free workshop is planned by the Tahsis Community Garden Society but is open to anyone interested in the topic. It will be held in the Senior Centre, 299 Alpine View.

Learn how native plants can reduce the financial and environmental costs of artificial fertilizers and toxic pesticides, reduce water use, and enhance your surroundings by working with nature. Todd Carnahan is a plant biologist and conservation photographer who has worked in ecosystem conservation for 30 years through a variety of agencies including regional governments, land trusts and other non-profits. This workshop is open to the public. Sincere thanks to the Tahsis Literacy Society for funding this event, and to the Tahsis Seniors Society for the use of their venue.

Tahsis Community Garden Seed Sale

Tahsis Community Garden Society and West Coast Seeds Spring Fundraiser February 14 - March 31, 2019 The Tahsis Community Garden Society is happy to announce that it has been approved to sell seeds from West Coast Seeds as a fundraising effort.  Many of you may already be familiar with this family owned company as it has been in operation on the lower mainland since 1983.  They have a great informational gardening guide/seed catalogue with a focus on non-treated, non-GMO and certified organic seeds of outstanding quality. The fundraising program offers a variety of 65 of West Coast’s most popular seeds, including herbs, vegetables and flowers. The fundraising brochure and order form are available at this link to the participants page.  Click on ‘Download Your Growing Guide’ at the bottom of the webpage for a full colour brochure, and to order, open up the BC XLXS spreadsheet.  The order form lists all the prices and will calculate the total cost, including GST.  Orders must be prepaid (cash preferred).  The Tahsis Community Garden is covering the shipping cost. Order deadline is March 31st and seeds will be available for pick up at our Annual General Meeting on April 14th.  Completed order forms and payment may be dropped off to Silvie at the library during open hours, or to Kim at the school – from 9 til noon, Mon – Thursday only.   If you have any questions, please speak with Silvie Keen (250.934.7979) or Kim Anderson (250.934.6465).

Best Slugfest Ever

We had a G R E A T turn out for the Community Garden's 7th Annual Slugfest.  Volunteer Michelle took a count about midway and best estimate is that there were 65 visitors to the garden.  We ran out of lemonade (stinkin hot!) but everyone got a fruit kebab or a slice of watermelon.  Thanks to Kim for  purchasing the fruit and finding the best strawberries in all of Nanaimo and to Silvie, Slicer of Fruit.  But more important, the Grand Slug Hunter 2018 is Silas - who found 22 slugs.  Silas' brother Elijah came in second  with 21 slugs, and brothers Carter & Kessler tied for third,  with 16 slugs each.  Slug Master Juanita tallied the slugs, read some slug stories to the children, and also brought along Dudley the Duck for show and tell.  Thank you Juanita - your kindness abounds.  Many thanks to Janet Kirsop who hand crafted Norman, the Grand Prize Slug.   Kudos to Jim, who built some sweet birdhouses for the kids to paint.  Gabe's colour combo was just excellent and Karma's wee bird feeder was another work of art, among many.   Lynda did a wonderful job making sure everything was set up and organized.  Thanks to Kim for lending her voice to address the crowd and to member volunteers Maureen, Michelle & Silvie who helped set up, take down and clean up.  Jim and Sarah F. also lent a hand with the tents, always appreciated, what a terrific community!

Thank you to everyone that braved the heat and shared their Mother’s Day with us in the garden. It was nice to meet the new garden members who dug right in preparing the garden for a bountiful season for all to enjoy!  We accomplished a lot today.  Hoping this good weather is here to stay as the May long is usually the start of great growing season.  Thanks again to all those that came out today. Tahsis Community Garden Society AGM

Sincere thanks to all the members who came to the 

2018 Annual General Meeting.  

President Kim Anderson delivered a wonderful, and very thoughtful talk about the many initiatives the Society took on last year.  Kim thanked all the volunteers who made it happen, and gave special recognition to the 2017 Executive team - each of whom brought their individual skills and abilities to the table to ensure the success of the whole.  

It is really phenomenal the amount of work that was accomplished and the Tahsis Community Garden thrives because of the dedication of its caring members.  

Sincere thanks to the 2017 Tahsis Community Garden Society Executive, from the left, Terry Fassbender (seated), Silvie Keen, Kim Anderson, Maureen Roth and Rita Dawson. 

The 2017 Executive stepped down (directors Catherine Gordon and Patricia Rice in absentia) and 

the 2018 Election was held.

 On behalf of all members of the Tahsis Community Garden Society, the new Executive extends its sincere thanks to Janet Kirsop of the Tahsis Seniors Society for making its centre available to us for the meeting.  Attendees enjoyed a really nice lunch spread with lots of fresh veggies and salads.  

2017 in Review

• PAC Spring Bazaar -  fundraising raffle 'Salad Bowl Garden' in ceramic planter
• 100 Asparagus CROWNS planted on the Queen's birthday, 50 in the Farm to School Bed (with student help) and 50 for members
• Grant monies of $1500 from the Tahsis Literacy Society for drip irrigation in the greenhouse and for the F2S garden, we hosted a system demo for all community members who were interested in learning about installations
• Greenways Trust Strathcona Food Security Group visit
• the 1st Annual Summer Solstice Garden Party with delicious potluck dishes, croquette games, music and fireworks
• Slugfest, our Tahsis Days Event  - a prize to the child who collects the most slugs, a craft tent, fruit kebobs, lemonade, an impromptu birthday party and Dudley the Duck
• Tahsis Days Silent Auction donation of handmade tiled shelf and matching bread box
• Garlic Harvest - our ongoing fundraiser bed full of garlic
• Fall Work Party and Winter shut down
• PAC Winter Bazaar - fundraising raffle 'Festive Fruit Bowl'
• The delivery of 2 big loads of Net Zero Waste Organic Compost from the Comox Valley Regional District - we are going to have some pretty awesome gardens this year, just wait and see!
