 Cascadia Seaweed has expressed interest in possibly growing seaweed in the Tahsis area. They are sponsoring a seaweed festival online. Most sessions are free.

Seaweed Days May 17 - 23, 2021 The thought of slowing climate change is often overwhelming, so much so that it leads to fear and inaction for individuals. But there is light where most people may not expect it! Living in our oceans, sequestering carbon, providing habitat, and adding oxygen to our atmosphere are brown, green and red seaweeds with so many potential uses — human food, pet food, livestock feed, bio-packaging, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, biofuels, and more! A little awareness mixed with a dash of innovation is a recipe for HOPE! The purpose of the festival is to educate people on the environmental benefits of seaweed, to expand consumers' acceptance of seaweed as a food product, and to leave participants feeling inspired to make a positive impact on the climate simply by inviting more seaweed into their lives! Essentially, we are looking to create more seaweed enthusiasts around the world! Festival headquarters and ground zero for the budding seaweed industry is Sidney, British Columbia. Although the majority of components in 2021 will be virtual — a combination of FREE pre-recorded and live sessions will be available in addition to two ticketed events, the in-person Catamaran Kelp Tour and the virtual Seaweed Farming 101 workshop. This first festival will lay the groundwork for a grand expansion in 2022 when we can (hopefully) gather safely in person again!

How to be a seaweed farmer

 Are you interested in becoming a seaweed farmer?

This virtual 2-day workshop is a great place to start!
May 19 & 20, starting at 9am PDT

Team members from the science and operations teams at Cascadia Seaweed will share experiences, lessons, challenges and milestones from their first two seasons as seaweed farmers. The host, Karen Elgersma, will facilitate the workshop and moderate questions from the audience, and her team will record the workshop.

Participants can expect to gain an understanding of the basics cultivating seaweed in this 2-day virtual workshop, shared from the perspectives of a start-up company in British Columbia, Canada. 

The Chief Science Officer, Dr. Jennifer Clark, and engineer and Operations Manager, Matthew Obee, will be joined by team members Daniel Pedde and Kennedy Nikel.

Dr. Louis Druehl and Dr. Patrick Martone will each provide a keynote address, and Dr. Colin Bates will share his knowledge of site selection. Two industry North American leaders have also been asked to participate.
