Esperanza Camps
ESPERANZA 9-12 BOYS AND GIRLS CAMP
Summer camp for 9-12 year old boys and girls at Esperanza is from July 22 - 29 this year 2023. All children welcome. For information please call or text Rick Lindholm at 250-735-9523 or contact office@esperanza.ca. We will provide you with registration forms, be happy to answer any questions that you may have, and we'll drop in to Tahsis to connect with parents/guardians.
The notice is a bit late for those who have been making summer plans... our apologies. You will notice that the camp is a bit later in the summer as well. We are looking forward to the last week of July... it's always a great time for the community at Esperanza when the youth are here for camp.

Two dead, two rescued after plane crash near Tahsis
Two people have died and two others have been rescued after a small plane crash near the Tahsis Inlet, northwest of Tofino.
At approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, Mounties were notified of the crash near Mizona Point, according to Nootka Sound RCMP.
Initial information indicated the aircraft, a Quest Kodiak 100, was occupied by four people flying from Masset to Tofino.
Flight records show the privately registered single-engine turboprop float plane departed at 11:21 a.m. An emergency locator beacon was activated, and two coast guard vessels were seen leaving Tahsis within minutes of the crash. Then, a cormorant helicopter from 19 Wing Comox also arrived.
Two passengers died on scene, and two others were transported to CFB Comox by Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and Canadian Armed Forces personnel.
BC Emergency Health Services then transported them to the hospital with injuries. The severity of their injuries is unknown.
They were very fast, the response time for everything was incredible,” said Allison Stiglitz, who saw the plume of smoke.
“Ah yeah, I don’t know many details about it, but I’m sure it’s sad for everyone that’s involved so,” said Lawrence Klingler, who also saw the smoke.
According to the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register, the plane’s registered owner is Cameron Robinson of Sherwood Park, Alberta.
At first, Stiglitz thought it was a wildfire, so she alerted authorities.
“I was taking my nephew for a hike, and we came around the corner here and we saw the smoke, so we just parked up there and called it in,” she added.
RCMP note the crash ignited a forest fire near Mozino Point. The BC Wildfire Service dashboard had the fire listed at 0.04 hectares, and it’s now classified as under control, which means it shouldn’t spread further.
Mounties are working alongside the Transportation Safety Board, and the BC Coroners Service to determine the cause of the incident.
It’s unknown who was on the plane when it went down.

Tahsis Rural Business Advisor hired
I am writing to introduce Paige Sawyer who was recently hired by the Village as a Rural Business Advisor. This one-year position is being made possible thanks to a grant from Island Coastal Economic Trust. Paige’s remit is to support sectors that are crucial to Tahsis' current positioning as a premier ecotourism destination, including: outdoor guiding (fishing, diving, hiking, water sports, climbing and caving), food service and food preparation and processing, and guest accommodation.
The specific focus of the Advisor position will be on helping build capacity in one or more small business fundamentals including: business planning, finance, HR, legal, partnerships, digital technology and e-commerce, grants, and marketing. The role is also critical in supporting the Village’s actions in implementing the Strategic Economic Development Plan.

Paige brings to this role extensive experience in small business, logistics, finance and marketing. We are delighted to have Paige on board as a dedicated resource to support our local businesses. Paige and her family live in Castlegar. She will travel to Tahsis at least 4 times during the year while connecting with businesses remotely at other times. Paige will be in Tahsis from July 9th to 18th. She hopes to connect with as many business owners prior to and during this period. Paula Wild author talk
The Tahsis Literacy Society is very excited to host a community presentation by Vancouver Island author Paula Wild about wolves, wolf behaviour and their long term past of co-existing with humans. In a skillful blend of natural history, Indigenous stories and interviews with scientists and conservationists, Paula's slideshow/presentation will offer suggestions and information on how humans can learn to co-exist with the apex predator. This event will take place at 7pm on Wednesday June 28th, at the Tahsis Seniors Centre. The presentation, followed by a Q&A period and refreshments should make for a fun and informative night for everyone. All ages are welcome to attend however as the presentation is geared for aged 10+, we ask that any children under 10 come accompanied by an adult. Hope to see you all there!

Threat: Potential power outages, downed branches.
A cold front will sweep across the south coast on Tuesday. Following the front will be strong northwest winds reaching 80 km/h along the west side of Vancouver Island. The strongest winds are expected along exposed coastal sections. The strongest winds will develop through Tuesday afternoon, continue through Tuesday night, then begin easing early Wednesday morning.
Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches.
Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.

No campfire season is here
Coastal Fire Centre enacts campfire prohibition
PARKSVILLE – Effective at noon Pacific Daylight Time on Thursday, June 8, 2023, campfires will be prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, except for the Haida Gwaii Forest District. This prohibition is being enacted to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.
These prohibitions apply to all public and private land within the Coastal Fire Centre jurisdiction, unless specified otherwise in an enactment (e.g., in a local government bylaw). Always check with local government authorities to see if any other burning restrictions are in effect. All categories of Open Fire use are still permitted in Haida Gwaii Forest District.
This prohibition will be in place until Tuesday, October 31, 2023, or until the order is rescinded.

On June 8, 2023 the types of open fires listed below are prohibited in the Coastal Fire Centre, with the exception of the Haida Gwaii Forest District:
- Category 1 campfires as defined in the Wildfire Regulation;
- Category 2 open fire as defined in the Wildfire Regulation; and,
- Category 3 open fire as defined in the Wildfire Regulation.
In addition to open fires being prohibited, the following activities and equipment are also restricted:
- Fireworks;
- Sky Lanterns;
- Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description;
- Binary Exploding Targets;
- Air curtain burners;
- Tiki and similar kind of torches; and,
- Chimineas.
This prohibition does not include the use of outdoor stoves. As per the Wildfire Regulation, an outdoor stove is a CSA-rated or ULC-rated device used outdoors for cooking, heat or ambiance that burns charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, and has a flame height that is less than 15 cm tall.

Anyone who lights, fuels or uses an open fire when a fire prohibition is in place or fails to comply with an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150 or, if convicted in court, be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be subject to a penalty of up to $100,000 and ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
The Coastal Fire Centre covers all the area west of the height of land on the Coast Mountain Range from the U.S.-Canada border at Manning Park, including Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park in the north, the Sunshine Coast, the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and Haida Gwaii.
