Update on egg sales from Tahsis Farm

Hey folks,
Update on the chickens themselves in case you haven't come up in a while: We have two pens with about 15 birds in each. One pen is road island reds, they are 2.5 years old which is ancient in the chicken world. Still they produce between 8 and 13 eggs a day. The other pen is Barred Rocks. They have some bad habits (pecking at each other and each others eggs) and produce about 8-12 eggs a day, but often have destroyed a few before we can get to them.
SO we've ordered 40 layers and they will arrive around the 25th. We'll be butchering our currents hens (anyone want to buy a stewing chicken?) and will have a whole new flock by the end of September. These will be a different breed (high line browns) who are great layers. So there you have it... we'll be limping along for another week or so, have about a week of adjustment while the ladies get used to their new home, and then be back in the eggs the beginning of October
Thanks for bearing with us as we refresh our flock and as we try a different sales approach 🙂 Once we are settled up with you all we'll be doing first come first serve on Sundays. By the sounds of it, with changes at the farm the subscription system won't be possible until we have someone here at the farm on a more consistent basis who can commit to managing accounts.

Tahsis Farm concert is one week away.

The Long War @ Tahsis Farm

Tahsis Farm

On Sunday, August 5th at 3:30 PM
Doors at 3:00 PM

The Long War is a Vancouver based Indie Band with haunting harmonies, unique songwriting and a modern Canadian sound. Singer/song writer Jarrett Lee works together with vocalist/guitarist Chad Gilmour, vocalist/keyboardist Jessica Lee, vocalist/drummer Neil Williamson, and bassist Carson Webber to create a dynamic sound thatranges from Folk to Rock. Jarrett’s inspiration can largely be attributed to the landscapes and environments that have influenced him throughout his life. Building out from this foundation Chad, Jessica and Neil provide vocal support through their harmonies bringing Jarrett’s lyrical imagery to life, defining the music of The Long War.
The Long War were selected as the winner of the 2017 CBC SearchlightContest with their song Breathe In Breathe Out recently listed as one of CBC Music's top 100 songs of 2017. Their recent success has afforded them the opportunity to perform at the CBC Music Festival in Toronto, Banff Performance In The Park as well as the reopening of Ottawa’s National Art Center as part of the Canada 150 Celebrations. Their debut album Landscapes, recorded at Metal Works, is scheduledfor release in April. The Long War has been featured on several radio and television spots including q with Tom Power and Canadian Musician Magazine.

Tahsis Farm

Tahsis Farm is so much more than a farm. It is is situated on an old logging camp surrounded by stunning coastal and forest backdrop, creating a unique blend of rustic, rugged, and natural beauty everywhere you look. It is an art residency, microbrewery, and a food farm. It is a collection of individuals all working on various projects from raising goats, ducks, and chickens, to growing and foraging food, to building cabins, and is a creative space for artists, writers, musicians, and those working in tech. The farm’s greater goal is to provide living and work spaces for people with passion projects. For photos, search #Tahsisfarm on Instagram.

Local artist and his dog featured on CBC.ca

ARTSTAGRAM

This B.C. artist and his dog go on adventures that look like something out of Game of Thrones

Who knew Vancouver Island looked so much like Westeros?

Follow Troy Moth on Instagram (@troymoth) for more breathtaking photos like this one. (Instagram/@troymoth)
Name: Troy Moth
Handle: @troymoth
He's been featured in Vogue and Rolling Stone, and his fine art photography is in the permanent collection at the Art Gallery of Victoria, but that's not what you'll typically find on Troy Moth's Instagram. "Somehow," laughs the 32-year-old artist, "my Instagram turned into a dog feed."
Not just any "dog feed," though. Not with that pedigree. But Nikita, his snow-white companion, is definitely the star of this account — and it's because wherever Moth goes, he brings his dog and his camera.
Nikita's a husky mix, Moth explains. "I've always had a little idea that she might have trace amounts of wolf in her." And together, they've run through rain forests of the Pacific Northwest, splashed in the lakes of Northern Quebec and prowled the grassy meadows of Wyoming. Most of what you'll see on his feed was captured near the artist's home base in Tahsis, B.C. It's a village on Vancouver Island's coast, about 300 km northwest of Victoria. There, he and two business partners are developing a variety of projects including an art gallery and brewery/distillery in addition to a tech incubator called Capacitor. Nikita, it would seem, is a silent partner — at least when she's not barking. "She's always with me unless I have to fly," he says. "I mean, she's here right now, lying at my feet."
Their story began four years ago. Moth, who was raised in Sooke, B.C., had recently returned to Vancouver Island after running his own photo studio in Toronto. Through one of the locals, he found Nikita. She was two years old then, and living in an abusive home. Before they met, she'd never left her crate, but now, the world is her dog park — and Moth has documented their journeys together from the start. She joins him on his photo shoots and film projects. She joins him everywhere, really. "I don't really go anywhere to take a picture of her — we just go places," he explains simply. "She needs exercise and I need exercise, and I have my camera and I take pictures." But secluded alpine fields are their favourite places to be — otherworldly mountain landscapes that look like something out of Game of Thrones. "One of my business partners calls her a direwolf every now and then," Moth laughs. "But I know the inside her, which is this little, nervous dog."
Recently, though, Nikita's had to learn how to share the spotlight. Moth's girlfriend has a rescue dog of her own named Loup. "Loup is very similar to Nikita — similar personality. They're both adopted dogs and both alpha females, so the introduction of them was really tricky," Moth says, even though the photos suggest something ruggedly idyllic. The couple is writing a storybook about Nikita and Loup, he says, and he'll be shooting original photos for the project, which they plan to self-publish later this year. But that's just one of the unexpected benefits of letting your Instagram go to the dogs. "I'm sure there must be other photographers who travel around with their dogs," he says, "but I have a hunch that I've gotten jobs because of Nikita. I've definitely had clients ask, 'So...is Nikita coming to the set?'"

NoSoF has begun

Here are some photos of the last of the set up and sound check. The music festival began yesterday and will be going full bore today from noon. The stage is a construction miracle. There is lots of beach space to sit, bring chairs or a blanket. You'll want to be able to say, "Yes, I was at the first one."

(Photos thanks to Dave and Stella Richards.)

Tahsis Farm Website

We are all a bit curious about progress at the Tahsis Farm site. (The land that used to be owned by Robbie Russell, just past West Bay beach.) They have started a beautiful website to keep us up to date on what is happening. Check it out at tahsisfarm.com

Food Security Visit

On Sunday, 5 people came to Tahsis to visit and tour our town, to see how Tahsis works to improve food security in our remote location.

Representatives from the Strathcona Food Security Project, and Greenways Land Trust enjoyed checking out the Local, our self serve farmers market stand, the busy Captain Meares Elementary Secondary School Kitchen, Tahsis Farm, the exciting new future brewery and artists retreat endeavor up past West Bay, and our flourishing Tahsis Community Garden.  A nice lunch by the water at Westview Marina was appreciated by all.

Tahsis has a lot to be proud of!
