Tahsis is a remote village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With only 400 residents, we don't have many of the conveniences of larger towns but we do have community spirit and lots to do in our spectacularly wild and beautiful environment.

Wood Stove Exchange Program
Background/Overview
The Strathcona Regional District is offering a regional wood stove exchange pilot program in 2017. Residents from the villages of Gold River, Tahsis, Zeballos and Sayward, and from each of the four electoral areas (A, B, C, and D) are eligible to apply for a $250 rebate when changing out their older, smoky wood stoves for lower-emission appliances, including new CSA-/EPA-certified wood stoves, pellet stoves and gas stove/fireplaces.
The regional wood stove exchange program is part of a provincial initiative designed to encourage British Columbians to help improve community air quality. Changing out your old, smoky wood stove is good for the environment and your pocket book. New high efficiency stoves are designed to burn more effectively, using less wood and ultimately saving you money.
When the program was launched in 2017, there were 26 rebates available. There are approximately 11 vouchers remaining and they will be given to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. The wood stove exchange program has been extended, and will end on December 31, 2018. Please ensure you take advantage of the opportunity before the program ends.
To learn more about the initiative, go to the Provincial Wood Stove Exchange Program website.
Many people throughout our region use wood as a main source for heat in their homes, while others use wood stoves as a back-up. Unfortunately, wood smoke contains a number of pollutants that can be harmful to your health and help to create smog. It can cause eye, nose and throat irritations, as well as headaches, nausea and dizziness, and can affect people with heart or lung problems who are especially vulnerable. When using wood stoves, it is important to ensure you protect yourself and your family by installing smoke detectors and at least one carbon monoxide detector in your home.
To learn more about how wood burning smoke affects air quality, see Health Canada's information on wood smoke and indoor air.
How does it work?
If you have an old wood stove that you would like to change out, download a copy of the wood stove exchange program voucher and fill out all sections, including the voucher checklist on the second page, and return it to the Strathcona Regional District. Participating retailers can help you with this process.
In order to qualify for the program, you must have an appliance that is presently in use for heating purposes in your home, and it must be a non-CSA/EPA certified stove built prior to November 1, 1994. A photo of the old stove, fireplace or wood burning furnace that is being changed out must be included with your voucher.
Next, an approved appliance must be purchased and installed. Check with participating retailers to confirm your new stove qualifies for the program, and whether there are any additional manufacturer rebates available. Information on eligible replacement appliances can be found here. The regional district will require a copy of your purchase receipt and a photo of the newly installed appliance.
If the wood stove replacement is a solid fuel burning appliance or insert, you will require a copy of a WETT-certified technician's installation or inspection report of the stove and chimney assembly.
As part of the program, participating retailers will ensure your old appliance will be decommissioned; it cannot be reused. You will need the retailer's signature on your voucher verifying this step was completed and have them include a photo of the decommissioned stove.
Completed vouchers with all supporting materials may be dropped off or sent by mail to:

Tahsis Farm concert is one week away.
The Long War @ Tahsis Farm
Tahsis Farm
On Sunday, August 5th at 3:30 PM
Doors at 3:00 PM
Doors at 3:00 PM
The Long War is a Vancouver based Indie Band with haunting harmonies, unique songwriting and a modern Canadian sound. Singer/song writer Jarrett Lee works together with vocalist/guitarist Chad Gilmour, vocalist/keyboardist Jessica Lee, vocalist/drummer Neil Williamson, and bassist Carson Webber to create a dynamic sound thatranges from Folk to Rock. Jarrett’s inspiration can largely be attributed to the landscapes and environments that have influenced him throughout his life. Building out from this foundation Chad, Jessica and Neil provide vocal support through their harmonies bringing Jarrett’s lyrical imagery to life, defining the music of The Long War.
The Long War were selected as the winner of the 2017 CBC SearchlightContest with their song Breathe In Breathe Out recently listed as one of CBC Music's top 100 songs of 2017. Their recent success has afforded them the opportunity to perform at the CBC Music Festival in Toronto, Banff Performance In The Park as well as the reopening of Ottawa’s National Art Center as part of the Canada 150 Celebrations. Their debut album Landscapes, recorded at Metal Works, is scheduledfor release in April. The Long War has been featured on several radio and television spots including q with Tom Power and Canadian Musician Magazine.
Tahsis Farm
Tahsis Farm is so much more than a farm. It is is situated on an old logging camp surrounded by stunning coastal and forest backdrop, creating a unique blend of rustic, rugged, and natural beauty everywhere you look. It is an art residency, microbrewery, and a food farm. It is a collection of individuals all working on various projects from raising goats, ducks, and chickens, to growing and foraging food, to building cabins, and is a creative space for artists, writers, musicians, and those working in tech. The farm’s greater goal is to provide living and work spaces for people with passion projects. For photos, search #Tahsisfarm on Instagram.

Tahsis' Little Free Library
Tahsis is now a member of the international Little Free Library association. Their slogan is "Take a book. Leave a book." It's like a book swap spot. The Tahsis Literacy Society bought all the materials and woodworker, Jim Godolphin donated his time and made a beautiful little library. Feel free to borrow from the case located by the post office. Also share with others books you loved. In addition to books any type of library materials can be donated: DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, magazines etc.

Best Slugfest Ever
We had a G R E A T turn out for the Community Garden's 7th
Annual Slugfest. Volunteer Michelle took a count about midway and best estimate is that there were 65 visitors to the garden. We ran out of lemonade (stinkin hot!) but everyone got a fruit kebab or a slice of watermelon. Thanks to Kim for purchasing the fruit and finding the best strawberries in all of Nanaimo and to Silvie, Slicer of Fruit. But more important, the Grand Slug Hunter 2018 is Silas - who found 22 slugs. Silas' brother Elijah came in second with 21 slugs, and brothers Carter & Kessler tied for third, with 16 slugs each. Slug Master Juanita tallied the slugs, read some slug stories to the children, and also brought along Dudley the Duck for show and tell. Thank you Juanita - your kindness abounds. Many thanks to Janet Kirsop who hand crafted Norman, the Grand Prize Slug. Kudos to Jim, who built some sweet birdhouses for the kids to paint. Gabe's colour combo was just excellent and Karma's wee bird feeder was another work of art, among many. Lynda did a wonderful job making sure everything was set up and organized. Thanks to Kim for lending her voice to address the crowd and to member volunteers Maureen, Michelle & Silvie who helped set up, take down and clean up. Jim and Sarah F. also lent a hand with the tents, always appreciated, what a terrific community! |
Rec Centre Lost and Found
We have lots of lost & found items that need to be claimed. It's all been washed and is ready to go! Please come see if they are your belongings. Any unclaimed items will go to the thrift store next week.
