Share a Smile Society - Free Dental Clinic
Last winter my tooth broke on the exact day the Share a Smile Society came to visit. They checked it out and made sure it was safe for me to wait for a crown in Campbell River, and gave me a flouride treatment. They are extremely generous with their time and expertise. How fortunate we are in Tahsis that they come and visit us!
"Share a Smile Society is a registered not for profit charity dedicated to providing dental care and instruction to remote Canadian and international communities where such services are lacking. There is no charge but donations are gratefully accepted. The volunteers are not compensated for their time and pay for the supplies, transportation, equipment and food on their own or with the help of donations."

GISHWHES
A handful of Tahsis residents were recently involved in an internet phenomenon called GISHWHES, which stands for the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen. Worldwide, thousands of participants, called Gishers, spent a week madly racing around creating unusual works of art and performing random acts of kindness. Gishers pay to register in the hunt and form online teams, raising money for the charity Random Acts. The list of items to create is over 200 lines long.
From the GISHWHES website:
"The Items are “captured” as videos or images and uploaded to this website to memorialize the annual Gishwhes experience and to supply the judges with something to judge. The more sublime and creative a submission, the more points awarded. Items range from the sweet and touching, “perform a sock puppet show at a children’s hospital” to the weirdly sublime, “a fully dressed storm trooper cleaning a pool next to a sunbather,” to the absolutely impossible, “get the word “gishwhes” written on something in space” (a team actually pulled this off!). You don’t need to be an amazing artist or social butterfly to win. You just need dedication, drive, a little creative thinking and a will to win.
We try to create a list that is challenging, thrilling and absurd. We like to see items that make us tear-up and laugh out loud. We like to have participants break out of their comfort zones, re-awaken their inner artist, and do a bit of good in the world."
One item on the list this year was Item #23 IMAGE: Tour a wastewater/sewage treatment factory dressed in formal attire, with an accompanying violinist or flutist." for 82 points.
This might seem impossible in a larger town or city. In Tahsis it took 2 phone calls to arrange; one to village employee Corky, and one to local Twang Gang member Stephanie. Easy!
This is the team photo of Andrea, our local Gisher. Her mustachioed teammates (ITEM #34) are from various places such as Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Victoria BC, Norway and Australia. Way to go, Andie, keeping Tahsis part of the weird and wonderful global village!

A Whale of a Time at Sunday Brunch
While we were enjoying our Eggs Benny down at Tahsis Time Grill on this perfect Sunday afternoon, a humpback whale made an appearance and gave us a show in the inlet! Apparently he's been hanging around all morning!

Tahsis Artisans' Coop
The members of the Tahsis Artisans' Coop are enjoying a successful summer! This is the halfway mark of the season and new stock is arriving every few days. If you haven't checked out the shop at the back of St. Joseph's Church (on the hill above Westview Marina) now's the time! Recent additions to the shop: More photography, aprons, travel pillows, pot pourri sachets (from local blossoms), more knitting, a new design of basket, more sea glass, more toys, more pottery, and new bags and blankets.
The Coop is open Mondays to Saturdays 11 - 4 and Sundays 1 -4, all the way through the summer until Labour Day. If you are visiting Tahsis and can't make it during those hours, you can arrange a private viewing by calling (250) 934-6236 or (250) 934-7805.

Blackberries
This is the time to be out picking berries! They are sweet, plump, plentiful and early this year! Worth the pain of the thorns, for sure. Everyone has a favourite spot around Tahsis and there are enough delicious berries for everyone who ventures out there with long sleeves and a bucket.
Coming up this fall: a Wildberry Festival in September at CMESS. Sponsored by Breakfast Clubs of Canada, and thanks to volunteers like Paul, who just donated several pounds of perfect blackberries for the school freezer, we will enjoy a community wide free dessert and coffee night to celebrate our excellent berries that grow locally. We'll have more details of that delicious event in a few weeks!
