Yesterday we enjoyed one of the most enjoyable annual Tahsis traditions, the Christmas Bazaar! 27 tables of vendors and organizations, perfect for shopping, enjoying treats and baked goods. There were several raffle tickets for sale, and some fun games for all ages.
The Twang Gang performed Christmas carols and sounded beautiful, and Santa and Mrs. Claus gave out great presents to all the kids.
Thank you to the hardworking PAC parents who organized this fun event. The holiday season has officially begun!
Tahsis is a remote village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With only 400 residents, we don't have many of the conveniences of larger towns but we do have community spirit and lots to do in our spectacularly wild and beautiful environment.

Motivational Speaker Amber Zirnhelt
Many thanks to Allison who organized a motivational speaker to come to Tahsis last week. Amber Ziirnhelt, a city planner in Campbell River, who is a former professional downhill mountain bike racer, visited Tahsis and gave two inspirational talks, one at the Rec Centre for over 20 community members, and one to the CMESS students and the visiting students from other schools in the district.
Both events were received well and it was a treat to meet and listen to Amber's presentations. Thanks to the Village of Tahsis and CMESS Pac for sponsoring this event.
While Amber was in Tahsis, she was able to visit with Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Society president Frank Collins and have a tour of the Salmon Hatchery.

Volleyball Tournament
CMESS hosted a volleyball tournament last week, welcoming atheletes from Gold River, Zeballos and Kyuquot. The kids had a great time and played hard, showing the results of weeks of practice.

Community Christmas Dinner
Tahsis residents know that the Seniors Society happens to have several members who are known for their excellent skills with cooking and baking. This free community dinner is sure to be a delicious way to usher in the holiday season. All are welcome, especially families with kids who want to have a word with Santa.
Back when I lived in a city, I remember lining up in a mall for hours waiting for a quick moment with Santa for my kids. In Tahsis we see him several times during the holidays, and his lovely wife too! No line ups!

CMESS Farm to School is Back!
Thanks everybody for a great first day back to our hot lunch program, Tahsis Farm to School at CMESS! We try and incorporate local foods into a wholesome delicious lunch for staff, students and visitors. Today we had chicken vegetable soup with local squash, bay leaves, thyme, and sage, and a vegetarian Italian noodle soup with local herbs, carrots and parsnips!
For more information on lunches, or to volunteer, call the school at 250 934-6305
Lots of hands make light work, and I had help from many friends this week, including Sheila, Fern, Debbie, Aubrey, and Janet. The local foods were from the school herb bed, and donated from Juanita and Harmony.
The kids were so enthusiastic! If they get this excited for chicken soup and salad they will really have fun on pizza day (Monday high school fundraiser).

Remembrance Day 2015 in Tahsis
A large crowd of Tahsis residents gathered at the cenotaph to lay wreaths and pay respects during a Remembrance Day ceremony today hosted by the Junior Canadian Rangers.
Some representatives of the RCMP and the BC Ambulance Service |
Wreaths were laid on behalf of several organizations and businesses in Tahsis |
Veteran Dave Madill and his wife Barb. Yesterday Dave spoke to students during the CMESS Remembrance Day ceremony. Thank you Dave for helping teach our youth about your service to Canada. |
Dan Dahling MC'ed the ceremony as the Patrol Leader of the Tahsis Junior Canadian Ranger Patrol |
The Senior's Society offered free soup, sandwiches and treats afterwards, and their excellent cooks fed us well. |
Author Night with Laurie Jones
Thanks to the Tahsis Literacy Society for sponsoring an Author Night with Laurie Jones, who lived in Tahsis while researching her book, Nootka Sound Explored, which was published in 1991.
The crowd met for a lovely potluck dinner at CMESS kitchen, then headed over to the Senior's Society Over Fifty Club Room for the presentation, dessert and coffee. About 40 friends and neighbours and visitors met to hear Laurie's account of her time here.
Laurie also talked about the process of researching the book and it was an enjoyable evening for both newcomers to the community and the people who remember when Tahsis was running as a booming mill town.
Watching video clips of our town's history was fun, as we recognized some familiar faces.
The next morning, several people met with Laurie and members of the Tahsis Historical Society to attend a special opening of the museum.

Reptile Day at CMESS
A huge thank you to Jennifer Lestage, the owner of CR Animal Parties who came out to CMESS to share her expertise and love of reptiles with our students and visitors! All the animals made quite an impression on the kids.
Among the creatures were a corn snake, a milk snake, a ball python, an Argentine boa constrictor, a blue tongued skink, a couple of crested geckos, a western hog nosed snake, and a box turtle. The younger children are familiar with Mango, the bearded dragon who lives in their classroom, but this was an excellent opportunity to see some of Mango's relatives!

Halloween in Tahsis
Bonfire starts at 7 pm, FIreworks start at 8 pm.
The weather was wet and windy, but that didn't dampen the spirits of the kids in Tahsis for one of our favourite occasions! There were celebrations at school, with everyone in costume...

At the Rec. Centre, we realized it was just too wet for the bonfire and fire works. But everyone had a great time anyway, with the all ages pumpkin seed spitting contest, and the Tahsis Lions Club sold hotdogs and provided free hot chocolate for everyone! The Tahsis Health Centre Auxillary Ladies judged all the great costumes, and Sharon gave out the prizes. Congratulations to all the winners!

Congratulations to Maureen and Mervin, who won the CMESS PAC Raffle for the one night stay at Whiskey Point Resort on Quadra Island! What a great prize! |
