ZOOM bingo message from Ruth R.

Good day Bingo devotees
Tomorrow is Bingo day and as Stephanie has important business to take care of I will be subbing for her. Hope I can do half as good as her.
Below is the info for the game for tomorrow night.
Few housekeeping rules
Any questions please send to me.
Bingo tickets are on sale till 4:30 tomorrow at the hardware store.
At 7:00 P.M. just click on the link below.
Please use a bingo dauber or a transparent marker so we can see the numbers below it.
As we only have 40 minutes ( to be on the safe side we say 40 minutes, they may give us more we're not sure) and not to sound bossy but if we could keep chatter to a minimum so everyone can hear the numbers called it will make for an easier time. Or you can mute your microphone and turn it up if you have a bingo.
Good Luck all.
Ruth Russell is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Message from Ruth Russell re: trivia night

Good morning Trivia enthusiasts.
Tonight is our first Trivia night.
7 p.m. use the link below and join us. Prize tonight is a $15 certificate for Sally's grill and $20 cash prize donated by Tony and Judy.
Now if possible I would appreciate it if people could let me know if they will be playing tonight just to give me an idea on how many questions to prepare. We only have 40 minutes and we need enough time to score the answers also so just a quick "I'll be there" is all I need. And if it turns out you can't make it not a problem, it's just for the first one I would like to have an idea on how to work within the time constraints.

Thank you and hope to see you tonight.
Ruth Russell is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Press release from VIRL

Library Services in the

New Normal

May 20, 2020
We are getting closer to the resumption of some
in-branch services at VIRL and are very hopeful
that physical items may soon start circulating
again in communities across our service area.
VIRL will undertake a phased approach to the
resumption of library services. We are currently in
Phase 1 with all branches and offices closed and
services being offered online.
Phase 2 will commence the week of June 1 with curbside service for books, DVDs, and other physical materials at some locations and proceeding to more service locations in the days that follow. Customers will also be able to return checked out items during the curbside hours of operation.  For the time being, collections will be limited to those titles available at each specific branch.
All items will be quarantined for 72 hours between loans.
More information about additional phases will be provided as it becomes available.
At the same time as these plans are underway, staff are also engaged in bringing more Alternate Services to our customers, including:
  • Email Information service – started
  • Phone Information service – starts the week of May 25
  • Virtual Appointments for tech help or research assistance – starts the week of May 25
  • Online programming, such as Storytimes, Book clubs, and Skills-building – Starts soon
I’m sure you share my excitement to be progressing in this manner for our communities. As always, we are basing our decisions around health and safety, and will ensure that all proper procedures, training, and equipment are in place before any branch services are resumed.
Thank you all for your patience and understanding.
Stay safe, everyone.
Sincerely,
Rosemary Bonanno

Project Squash off and running

Message from Silvie -
Project Squash: Well that was fun. Big shout out to Cheryl Odonnellwho started about 65 winter squash seedlings: acorn, butternut, spaghetti, Japanese, and pumpkin. Thanks Mr. Mayor for adding variety to the collection - we found a good home for the zucchini. It took a little more than 2 hours, AND we got to see a really wonderful garden (or two). Finally, thanks Mother Nature who made sure everything was well watered in.

Ten people volunteered lawn space for squash. When harvested, the squash will be given to the community cupboard food bank and to the yard owners

Press release from Vancouver Island Regional Library

Charting a path forward

May 15, 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented
challenges and disruptions across industries,
organizations, and individuals. We have all
been affected and libraries are no different.
On March 16, 2020, Vancouver Island
Regional Library (VIRL) temporarily suspended
all in-branch services to help combat the
spread of COVID-19 — a decision that held
the health and safety of VIRL staff and the
public as its central guiding tenant.
On May 7, British Columbians received news from the provincial government that the
provinces
will begin a gradual release of COVID-19 related restrictions.
The government, working with public health officials, businesses and labour organizations, will begin to lift restrictions in phases, gradually allowing for more social and economic activity, while closely monitoring health information to minimize the risk to the public. Under this plan, libraries fall under Phase 2, which the government says will likely come into effect on May 19.
To prepare for increased services, VIRL formed a Renewal and Recovery Taskforce that is moving forward with plans to re-instate some services to library customers across our service area. The Taskforce is proceeding with a phased model to safely and efficiently bring services into our communities.
In the coming days, we will share more information, including timelines, locations, and what services are available. VIRL branches will not open on May 19 but we do anticipate the resumption of some services in the very near future. It is vital that we only move forward once we have everything in place to do so safely.
We are working hard to deliver safe and sustainable services for communities large small. Stay tuned for more information.

BC Restart Plan

A Careful Restart

B.C.’s restart will be a careful, step-by-step process to ensure all of our combined efforts and sacrifices are not squandered.
For the different organizational sectors to move forward, they will be asked to develop enhanced protocols aligned with the Public Health and Safety Guidelines. A cross-ministry committee of deputy ministers will monitor the process and ensure overall alignment with the Public Health and Safety Guidelines and WorkSafeBC. The Provincial Health Officer will continue to provide input and advice as needed throughout the review process.
In some instances, this will require consideration by the Provincial Health Officer of lifting or modifying existing orders before certain businesses re-open. Businesses and organizations that are not covered by a Provincial Health Officer order may re-open or continue to operate but they will be expected to adopt and implement sector safety plans are they are finalized.

Phase 1

Where we are today

Essential Services Operating During COVID-19
  • Essential health and health services
  • Law enforcement, public safety, first responders and emergency response personnel
  • Vulnerable population service providers
  • Critical infrastructure
  • Food and agriculture service providers
  • Transportation
  • Industry and manufacturing
  • Sanitation
  • Communications and information technology
  • Financial institutions
  • Other non-health essential service providers
Industries that were designated as essential servicesdeveloped safe operation plans in consultation with WorkSafeBC and in compliance with the public health orders issued by the Provincial Health Officer.
As a result, B.C.’s economy has continued to operate in ways other provinces haven’t. But it’s undeniable that local businesses have suffered.
Many businesses closed for other reasons, including reduced demand, such as in the retail, hospitality and export industries. Others closed to do their part in helping to flatten the curve, protecting their customers and employees.
To help these businesses and other organizations get back on their feet, we need workplace practices that ensure British Columbians feel safe, whether they are returning to work or going out as a customer. That means employers will need to engage with their employees to find the right solutions and consider the concerns and needs of their customers.

Phase 2

Mid-May onwards

Under enhanced protocols:
  • Restoration of health services
    • Re-scheduling elective surgery
  • Medically related services:
    • Dentistry, physiotherapy, registered massage therapy, and chiropractors
    • Physical therapy, speech therapy, and similar services
  • Retail sector
  • Hair salons, barbers, and other personal service establishments
  • In-person counselling
  • Restaurants, cafes, and pubs (with sufficient distancing measures)
  • Museums, art galleries, and libraries
  • Office-based worksites
  • Recreation and sports
  • Parks, beaches, and outdoor spaces
  • Child care

Phase 3

June to September
If transmission rates remain low or in decline, under enhanced protocols:
  • Hotels and Resorts (June 2020)
  • Parks – broader reopening, including some overnight camping (June 2020)
  • Film industry – beginning with domestic productions (June/July 2020)
  • Select entertainment – movies and symphony, but not large concerts (July 2020)
  • Post-secondary education – with mix of online and in-class (September 2020)
  • K-12 education – with only a partial return this school year (September 2020)

Phase 4

To be determined
Conditional on at least one of the following; wide vaccination, “community” immunity, broad successful treatments:
  • Activities requiring large gatherings, such as:
    • Conventions
    • Live audience professional sports
    • Concerts
  • International tourism
The timing of a safe restart of night clubs, casinos and bars is a more complicated consideration. As with other sectors, industry associations will be expected to develop safe operations plans, for review, that are in keeping with Public Health and Safety Guidelines, as well as WorkSafeBC.
Resources to assist businesses and sectors as they restart their activities including new Health Guidelines and Checklists are available from WorkSafeBC

VIRL’s future plans

Expanded services
In the coming days, more services are coming to help VIRL customers stay connected and informed.
Customers with questions about VIRL’s digital tools, resources, and databases will be able to set up virtual appointments with staff over the phone, email, or web-based platform to have their questions addressed. Expanded email and telephone service will also allow staff to engage more quickly and thoroughly with customers.
Online programming, including Storytimes, books clubs, learning opportunities, and more, are in the pipeline and nearing implementation.
Looking ahead
A recently formed Renewal and Recovery Taskforce will develop a strategy and roadmap for how VIRL can resume offering in-branch services to customers. All decisions will be driven by the direction and guidance of health authorities.
In recent days, a number of library systems in BC have begun rolling out curbside pick-up of physical materials and VIRL has heard from a growing number of customers who are hungry for books. The models being implemented by other systems will be carefully reviewed by the taskforce, among other ideas and plans put forth by team members and other library systems.
“We understand just how important libraries are to so many in our communities,” says Melissa Legacy, VIRL’s Director of Library Services and Planning. “Whether it’s providing books to families, combatting social isolation for seniors, or offering a safe and welcoming space to people in need, libraries mean so much to so many and we are committed to providing services and supports to our communities as soon as it is safe to do so.”
As a regional system covering almost 45,000 square kilometres — including a mix of urban, rural, and remote branches — VIRL has unique challenges, considerations, and opportunities that the taskforce will consider. There is no one-size-fits-all model VIRL reopening our branches, but all options are on the table as the taskforce arrives at its recommendations. While it is too soon to pin a timeline to the resumption of in-branch services, VIRL is committed to bringing services back to our communities with health and safety as the number one consideration.
