From time to time, damage may occur to B.C. highways and/or highway infrastructure through motorist error or acts of vandalism. The Province may also incur costs when motor vehicle accidents require clean up or flagging. These events may result in a claim made by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure against the party involved.
Conversely, members of the public may claim against the ministry if they sustain bodily injuries or damage to their home, land or vehicle while traveling on provincial highways, and which have arisen out of construction or maintenance activities.
Claimants are responsible for taking steps to address their own damages, so please consider going through your own insurer to allow for repairs to be done immediately. Your insurer can then follow up on the claim on your behalf, and can include your deductible into the claim total.
Please keep in mind, in order for a claim to be payable by the Province, there must be proof that there was negligence on the part of the ministry and/or highways contractor. If there was no negligence, the claim is not payable. The contract between a highway maintenance contractor and the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure requires that the contractor meet specific standards and response times determined by the classification of the roadway in question. Once a deficiency, such as a pothole, has been detected, contractors must make the necessary repairs within those required response times.

Once we have received your information, you will be contacted within 10 business days to confirm receipt of your claim. We will forward your claim to the contractor responsible for the area where your incident occurred, notify you of the same and follow up as necessary for a response. Please note that the submission of this claim form is not an admission of liability by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure or its contractors or insurers. It is only a notification of an incident for the ministry to assess.

Province of BC - Travel and COVID-19
Travel restrictions for non-essential travel in B.C. are in place until May 25 to stop the spread of COVID-19 and variants of concern. Fines can be given to people who leave their region for non-essential travel. Stay local and stay in your community. Do not travel for non-essential reasons.
Restrictions on travel between regions of the province
Under the EPA, an order restricting non-essential travel between certain regions of the province is in place until May 25 at midnight. This includes travel for:
Travel regions
The order combines B.C.'s five health authorities into three regions of the province. Travel into and out of the regions for non-essential reasons is not allowed and is now prohibited by law. The regions are:
Enforcement
The goal of the order is education and reminding people about travel restrictions.
If the restrictions need to be enforced, police can issue a fine. At the discretion of police, people not obeying the travel restrictions may be subject to a $575 fine.
Police will not be engaging in random checks. Periodic road checks may be set up at key travel corridors during times associated with leisure travel to remind travellers of the order.
People from outside the province who are travelling to B.C. for non-essential reasons can be subject to the same enforcement measures.
Reasons for essential travel
Do not go on long trips within your region. Now is not the time for overnight vacations away from your community. Stay close to home. Visit your local beach, hiking trail or park.

VICTORIA -- Two new Coast Guard vessels have arrived on Vancouver
Island and are now undergoing preparations for deployment later this year to remote B.C. rescue stations in Hartley Bay and Tahsis.
The search-and-rescue vessels arrived in Victoria on Tuesday aboard the Atlantic Condor, a transport ship that left Dartmouth, N.S. with the cargo on Feb 18.
The new “Bay Class” vessels – CCGS Cadboro Bay and CCGS Florencia Bay – are high-endurance lifeboats that will respond to distress calls and conduct marine searches up to 100 nautical miles from shore.
The vessels are 19 metres long, have top speed of 25 knots and can self-right if capsized, according to the Coast Guard.
The vessel destined for Tahsis, on Vancouver Island’s remote northwest coast, is expected to deploy to the region in late spring, while the Hartley Bay vessel is expected to deploy to B.C.’s northwest coast later this year.
Before deployment, Coast Guard crews will be training on the vessels in and around Victoria.
The vessels are among 20 new search-and-rescue lifeboats the Coast Guard is receiving as part of a fleet renewal program. To date, eight of the new vessels have been delivered across the country.

Please see information below about the virtual Amateur (Ham) Radio certification course being offered by the Revelstoke Amateur Radio Society. Residents who join our regional volunteer emergency radio communication team may have their course fee reimbursed by the Strathcona RD following completion of the course.
The course will run on Sunday and Thursday evenings from May 16 - June 17, 2021. Below you will find some general information about the upcoming course.
Registration, Payment, and Refunds

Refunds will be available in full up until 12:00 PM Pacific on May 16, 2021. After that point no refunds will be possible. Paying students are also welcome to audit future online Basic courses at no additional charge.
Class Format
The classes will be run over Zoom video conference. There will be one permanent Zoom meeting ID/password combination for the entire course. All live sessions will be recorded and will be made available to all students.
Classes will take place on Sunday and Thursday evenings, 6:30-9:00pm Pacific Time from Sunday, May 16 - Thursday, June 17. The first four weeks will cover course content and the last week will be for exam review. Each class will follow this approximate schedule (all times are Pacific):

I like to include additional presentations on topics not necessarily covered by the exam as a form of enrichment. Past topics have included digital data/voice modes, Summits On The Air, and an overview of Handheld radios. If you are particularly interested in any topics related to amateur radio (like satellites, kit building, or anything else,) let me know and I'll try to fit it into the enrichment sessions. Occasionally course material may run into the enrichment block.
Time Commitment
There will be 25 hours of classes (with breaks) and 4-5 hours of reading over the 5 week course. You should also anticipate another 5-10 hours of self-guided studying to prepare for the final exam (depending on your technical knowledge and learning style.) I am happy to answer any questions you might have and discuss studying strategies that will work for your needs.
Classes will also be recorded and will be available in case you should be unable to attend any of the live sessions.
The Exam
The final exam for Basic qualifications is a 100 multiple-choice question test. A minimal passing grade for Basic is 70%, and 80% for Basic with Honors (see Section 5.3 of RIC-1, linked in Resources.)
Thanks to a collaboration with examiners on Vancouver Island, we have approval from ISED to conduct online amateur radio exams. You will need a webcam, a calculator, and a private space free of distractions. The exam for this course will be held sometime in March at a date to be determined (probably the week after the course ends.) Both the exam and the license are free.
Resources
We will be using the Amateur Radio Basic Qualifications Manual created by the UBC Amateur Radio Society and distributed under the GNU Free Documentation license. This is the most up to date study guide available and we have been given an advanced copy before it is released to the general public.
We will also be referring to the following documents from Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada (Formerly Industry Canada.) These can be a little dry, but a lot of the content on the exam comes directly from these documents. You can find them here:
A practice exam and study question tool are available online for the Basic qualification, along with the entire Basic question/answer pool. We'll be getting into this later in the course, but historically the more time you can spend practicing exam questions the higher your chances of passing will be. It is never too early to start familiarizing yourself with the exam content.

8 AM Apr 17th. Went looking for the wolf pack this morning and found two of these colored pups rummaging through the trailer park and river valley. This makes 2 Tinders and 1 White to the pack and setting up day camp above the trailer court. This one steered straight for me unafraid wanting to check me out after crossing the road and I was forced to reposition. (on my bike being quiet) Be careful neighbors and prayers for Crab bait

Team members from the science and operations teams at Cascadia Seaweed will share experiences, lessons, challenges and milestones from their first two seasons as seaweed farmers. The host, Karen Elgersma, will facilitate the workshop and moderate questions from the audience, and her team will record the workshop.
Participants can expect to gain an understanding of the basics cultivating seaweed in this 2-day virtual workshop, shared from the perspectives of a start-up company in British Columbia, Canada.
The Chief Science Officer, Dr. Jennifer Clark, and engineer and Operations Manager, Matthew Obee, will be joined by team members Daniel Pedde and Kennedy Nikel.
