Tahsis is a remote village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With only 400 residents, we don't have many of the conveniences of larger towns but we do have community spirit and lots to do in our spectacularly wild and beautiful environment.

Tahsis phone booths are not relics
A post about making a little free library from a telephone booth said, "Public payphones are now a relic, no longer in use, and often stand vacant." Not so in Tahsis where there is no cell phone service. We have five phone booths and they are used often by loggers and visitors who aren't here long enough to hook up a land line.
There is one at the rec centre,
One between the grocery store and the building supply:
One at the Spar Tree Motel,
One more at Westview Marina,(I think there used to be two.):
And my favourite where we always get a photo of our company by Sally's Grill:
Did I miss any?

Ham radio course complete.
Eleven Tahsis people spent two weekends in course work studying ham radio operation.
Their instructor, Amanda Glickman wrote the following:
Their instructor, Amanda Glickman wrote the following:
"They've finished the formal class work. Most of them have a few more weeks of studying before they'll be ready, so we've set the exam date for later in November. We'll let you know when they're done! They've done about 30 hours of in class work so far, and will have done at least double again (60) in at home studying. It's a significant commitment. It should be noted that community members interested in radio are encouraged to contact us with SRD and Chuck St. Denis, your local contact."
Thanks to them for taking this training for future emergency situations.

Senior's Centre now open on Mondays
Lynda L. has volunteered to open the seniors' centre on Mondays. Here's what she wrote:
"Monday afternoon (1:30 to 3:30) the centre is open to seniors and is free. Coffee and tea will be on. Enjoy the pool table, grab a book, visit with some friends, play some cards. Just relax in out of the weather and see some different walls than home. (lol). Then why not head over and join in some Aqua Fit after? (hint)."
The club is located in the south end of Captain Meares Elementary and Secondary School.

No one said recycling was fun
Some people are just overwhelmed by recycling. In Tahsis, we have the ability to recycle most materials and that can be daunting. But we all know the reality is that our dump is running out of room and eventually we will have to pay to have our garbage trucked out. That won't be cheap. The more we recycle, the less we pay for. Recycled materials earn some money; dumped materials earn none.
If nothing else, I would encourage people to start by recycling the things that can all go in the same bin. That way you have no sorting to do. One bin in the recycling centre will take: tin cans, all plastics with a number (1-7) on them, and cardboard milk cartons. If everyone recycled only those things, what a difference it would make.

Working out in the water is one of the most therapeutic activities one can take part in. Water aerobics builds cardio, strength and resistance all while being easy on the joints and in a cool and relaxing atmosphere! Here are the top 10 benefits of water aerobics.
- Increase muscle strength
- Build endurance
- Increases flexibility
- Low-impact exercise
- Alleviates pressure on the joints
- Relieves stress and decreases anxiety
- Burns calories
- Reduces blood pressure
- Cooling exercise
- Popular activity
- In addition, in Tahsis the classes may soon be free and Sarah J. who leads them is excellent at presenting the exercises at three different levels so you can choose how hard you want to work.

Thanksgiving at Esperanza 2017
Every fall, the nearby church camp, Esperanza invites everyone to come for Thanksgiving. People come from Tahsis, Zeballos and towns farther away. The Esperanza staff brings boats for the twenty minute ride to the camp. (All photos by Wouter Terlunen)
People have the choice of coming early and attending a church service or coming later. The service this year was lead by Earl Johnson who first came to Tahsis 69 years ago.
The meal this year was prepared mostly by volunteers. Tasty in every way.
Thanks to our Esperanza neighbours for their hospitality. And thanks to Wouter Terlunen for sharing his photos.
