Important Presentation from Mowachaht Muchalaht First Nation

Changing the Landscape

During the community gathering to go over the new Economic Development Action Plan, we were able to listen to a presentation from the Mowachaht Muchalaht First Nation about the history of our area, the current challenges and the future plans and actions being taken now for the benefit of the MMFN territory and Tahsis, which is part of that territory.

Mowachaht Muchalaht First Nation was represented at the Economic Development meeting in Tahsis by Chief Larry Andrews - Elder Advisor to the Council of Chiefs, Chief Patrick James, and Michael McGee who presented the information, and spoke eloquently about the exciting outcomes if we work together to face our challenges.

Thank you so much for coming to Tahsis and sharing your information with the community!

Organic Master Gardener visits the 4-6 class

Terry, an Organic Master Gardener and CMESS parent, along with his wife Mary, visited Ms. Ante's 4-6 class today to do a demonstration of Bokashi Composting, a way of breaking down kitchen waste using fermentation to build good soil for our gardens.

This method has some ecological advantages over the usual compost heap, and is very frugal.  It's a fascinating process to turn the leftover spaghetti scraped off your plate into a rich and luxurious soil teeming with nutrients.

Terry plans to help the kids learn and grow at the Tahsis Community Garden, and enjoys sharing the science of the different aspects of gardening, from soil analysis to worm feeding to checking (and enjoying!) the sugar content of your carrots and strawberries.

Thanks for coming in and sharing your wealth of knowledge, we will have a great garden season this year, Terry and Mary.  Welcome to Tahsis, and we are happy you are our newest members at the Tahsis Community Garden Society.

Mrs. Ante even brought some scraps from home

Tahsis Village Council visits Farm to School at CMESS

Thank you to Mayor Jude Schooner, Councillor Brenda Overton and Councillor Kathy Bellanger for joining volunteers Glenda and Janet and I to help serve lunch on Thursday.  We had a delicious Italian chicken vegetable soup topped with Parmesan with a crisp Caesar salad on the side.

The Tahsis Farm to School program at Captain Meares Elementary Secondary School is a great program to promote healthy, affordable lunch twice a week to the students, staff and guests.  For any questions, or if you'd like to join us for lunch or volunteer with us, call the school at (250) 934-6305.

Welcome Baby Gaia Estrelle

Newborn Gaia Estrelle slept through most of her party cuddling with her grandmother and other various guests as parents Graham and Sarah and big sister Karma enjoyed hosting a potluck dinner to celebrate her arrival.

Gaia's family is part of the fastest growing part of our Tahsis community, the treeplanters!  Here is a link to an article about Vancouver Island treeplanting from part-time Tahsis resident writer Annegret Heinold:  Reading the Soil

Tahsis Economic Development Strategy – Upcoming Event

The process of development of an Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan for the Village of Tahsis is in its final stages. This Economic Development Strategy will be the foundation of future local economic planning and policy, in alignment with the 2010 OCP, and other Village planning initiatives.

Community workshops involving residents, landowners and businesses have been conducted, a community survey has been completed and a background report has been prepared.

Based on that input, a Draft Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan has been prepared by the consultants, George Penfold of Comox, and Steve Nicol and Randy Sunderman of Lions Gate Consulting Inc. in Vancouver.

The Draft Strategy and Action Plan will be presented at a community open house and meeting as follows:

February 24,
Tahsis Community Centre - Open House, 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Community Meeting, 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

The Open House will be informal opportunity to review the proposed strategies and discuss them or any of the related background information and reports with the project consultants. At the meeting, the consultants will present a summary of the Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan. There will also be discussion about the proposed strategies and their implementation.

The Draft Strategy and Action plan can be found on line at
Tahsis Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan Draft.

Happy Valentine's Day

So, on this day of hearts, I would like to let you know how much I love the  Tahsis Health Centre.

Our doctors who visit every Tuesday and Thursday, take the time to really listen and address any concerns in a nurturing way.

Our nurses take care of us the rest of the time, from routine blood tests to emergency after hours visits, answering the 24 hour health crisis line at 1-888-494-3888.

We are also grateful for our kind and discreet receptionist who makes sure all our needs are met as quickly as possible.

Here is a message from a special guest blogger, Stephanie, who had some recent heart concerns.  Thanks Stephanie for sharing your experience!

"Karli suggested I write this up for Valentine’s Day since it is heart related.
But the true topic is how great out Medical Centre is and how we may miss that at times.

I had a call from a specialist in Campbell River saying she needed me to wear a heart halter for 24 hours. Campbell River hospital would call to give me an appointment. And we all know what that means. That means $40 worth of gas, a hotel for nearly $100. Eight meals for at least $100. And since we’re in town it means shopping for stuff not available here so who knows what the total is. But it’s in the hundreds of dollars for sure.

On a hunch I called the Tahsis Medical Centre and asked if it was possible to do this test in Tahsis. Yes, it is. The machine comes from Gold River. No travel or expenses necessary.

Doctors out of town have a hard time understanding that the drive in from Tahsis is no small deal. It’s worthwhile to double check with our Medical Centre to see if the test can be done here."

Our total list of services here in Tahsis include:  (from the Island Health Tahsis page)

A copy is now up on the village website.

Tahsis Video by Robert Spyrka

Our small village, struggling to reinvent itself, used to be a booming mill town.  While most of the residents moved away when the mill closed down, there are still strong nostalgic feelings for the good old days.

Robert Spyrka has compiled a video slideshow of old and new photographs of the people and places in and around Tahsis.  It's making the rounds of facebook sharing, and everyone is loving it!  The link was posted originally on the Tahsis, BC facebook page.  With lots of stories and photos being shared, that page feels like a reunion.
