Two people — Meggan Joseph and Doug Elliot — have now resigned from Tahsis council, opening up two seats in a byelection this spring.

No date that has been set for the vote in the community of about 400 people west of Campbell River.

Joseph had been under public pressure to resign after moving to Campbell River for work, Mayor Martin Davis said Thursday.

“She was an excellent councillor,” said Davis, who said he would have supported Joseph’s decision to either stay or leave.

Elliot submitted his resignation effective Jan. 31, after the village successfully applied to the Supreme Court of B.C. for an order that he be disqualified from holding office until the next general election.

Council said Elliot had not attended several council meetings. He was also accused of taking the gavel from another councillor who was chairing a fractious council meeting.

The byelection and advance poll dates will be set by the chief election officer, said Mark Tatchell, chief administrative officer for Tahsis.
