Lawrence is fixing up a house and yard in the townsite. As part of his work, he built a torii gate. This is his explanation why.
"You might be wondering why I choose to make a rather "large" statement in erecting a torii gate. Japanese wood working techniques are of the finest in the world. Their choice of wood, Yellow cedar, is highly regarded as the best .We have lots of it. All the pieces of wood used in this project were salvaged from cut blocks. My goal was to make Japanese people feel welcome in our small town. The west coast of BC has a long shared history with Canadian-Japanese citizens. My small contribution to the interment prisoners. I hope their ancestors will feel welcome."
He would like to see a twinning with a Japanese sister city and a student exchange program. Both good ideas.
