Tahsis is a remote village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With only 400 residents, we don't have many of the conveniences of larger towns but we do have community spirit and lots to do in our spectacularly wild and beautiful environment.

The CMESS Grades 7-9 Return from trip
The CMESS grades 7-9 have just returned from a great 3 day canoe trip on Quadra Island. The 9 students enjoyed perfect weather conditions and had a lot of fun and exercise. Once again our kids are lucky to experience activities they might otherwise miss, thanks to the Nootka Sound Outdoor Program.

Epicure party at the Over 50 Club
On June 7th at 7 pm, the Tahsis Seniors Society is hosting an Epicure tasting party at the club room at CMESS. All are welcome!
Last night I cracked open my new "Oh Canada" dry glase spice mix and put it on my chicken. It has a delicious maple garlic flavor! I'm looking forward to browsing the catalogue again.

Fire Destroys Tahsis Christian Church
I was away this past weekend when a fire destroyed the Tahsis Christian Church, an iconic community building in Tahsis, on the inlet. No one was seriously hurt. Thanks to the Tahsis Volunteer Firefighters, together with several community members, the fire, which threatened to spread to the neighbouring houses up the hill, was contained and extinguished.
Being married to a firefighter, I can attest to the incredible sense of community spirit and responsibility that these people take to heart as they work hard to keep us safe and sound.
Here is the article in the Gold River Record, written by Lori Bennett, who first saw the flames and called it in.

Fiesta Night at CMESS
Over the Spring break this year, 8 of our high school students traveled with their principal Glyn and parent volunteer Tia to Merida, Mexico for a service trip with lots of fun and educational activities.
Today, the kids and Glyn hosted an amazing event at the school, serving a traditional Yucatan meal to 30 community members and during dinner there were 2 slide shows. Kaitlyn spoke about all the different foods and meals they enjoyed, and Glyn gave the audience the information about all the sites they visited and work they did.
Local potter Elsie Horvath donated 30 hand crafted bowls to help support the fundraising for this trip, and the people who bought tickets got to pick out their favourite bowl on display to use during the feast, and then take it home.
Our community has supported the school fundraising efforts to an incredible degree. Like Glyn pointed out, we have asked a lot, and people have given generously over and over. This particular trip has been a valuable addition to the students' education.

Each bowl from Tree to Sea Pottery (Elsie Horvath) was unique and had an individual phrase engraved on the bottom. There was a hot pepper motif glazed in each bowl too, to symbolize this trip. |

New Tahsis Business
One of the great things about living and working in this part of the world is the view. Our rugged, wild coast, our forests and waterfalls, mountains and rivers, and always the horizon of the ocean, which seems to be beautiful in a different way every time you look at it. If you are patient, you can see all kinds of animals and birds in amongst the scenery.
Tahsis artist Susan Felhouser has started a new business based on her excellent ability to capture all these things with her photography. Her friends have been enjoying her photos for years, and now she's sharing her skills in an online business. Check out her website: Susan Felhouser Photography

Excellent Mother's Day Brunch
In honour of Mother's Day, my family took me to the Conuma Grill at Moutcha Bay Resort for brunch. What a treat! I am so happy that this place has just opened for the 2015 season. I've enjoyed lunch and dinner there a couple of times over the past couple of years, but this was my first brunch.
I ordered baked salmon and scallops in phyllo and enjoyed every bite. At our table the steak and eggs, avocado and smoked salmon eggs benedict and pecan maple waffles with strawberries and cream were all fabulous also.
Moutcha Bay is a beautiful resort with a lovely view, just a quick 20 minute drive from Tahsis.
Sitting at the next table were a couple of the nicest moms in Tahsis, Val and her daughter-in-law, Allison. So nice to see the boys spoiling you two.

Delicious Tasting Party
The Epicure Tasting Party was successful and delicious. All of us were ordering a few treats to cook with. As Fern commented, "it's time for a change" and we will all enjoy fresh new dishes this summer. We all especially enjoyed the souvlaki seasoning on beautiful local Tahsis prawns. To check out the catalogue, or to order, call Aubrey at (250) 934-7602
There is another Epicure Party coming up in June, and I will post details closer to the date, for those who missed out on this go round.

Another Cougar Shot
Last night another cougar attacked a small dog and killed it in the town site. Conservation officers were able to come in right away and track it, and the cougar was shot. It's sad to lose a dog or cat in this violent way and i hope this is the last incident, after several house cats have been killed and now this one dog was killed also.

Tahsis Days Theme Ideas
Tahsis Days: 3 fun filled days of events for all ages, the 3rd weekend in July every year. Time to start planning!
If you have any ideas for a fun and interesting Tahsis Days Theme, please share it at the Tahsis Building Supply, the Tahsis Supermarket or the Rec. Centre. Each location has a tin by the counter for submissions. We have had some great themes in the past few years, such as "Under the Sea", "Happy Birthday Tahsis", "The Wild West Coast", "Bull of the Woodstock", and "Holiday Celebrations".
Some of the Tahsis Days events can be enhanced with a theme, such as the 60's dance during the "Bull of the Woodstock" theme, or the Chili Cookoff during the "Wild West Coast" theme. The annual parade lends itself well to fun themes too.
Please submit your ideas soon, since the Village is only collecting them until May 11th. Put in as many ideas as you like!
