Mayor’s report

This is an update on the Connected Coast project, an initiative to bring high speed internet to much of the BC coast using fibre optic cable, both land and sea-based. This project has largely been completed, including an underwater connection that made landfall in Tahsis last year. The remaining connection, known as Last Mile, provides the connection infrastructure within the municipality to our houses. Other small communities such as Zeballos and Tsaxana have received grants of up to $2.5 million to achieve this. We however have not despite the Ministry of Citizen Services committing to providing financial assistance to small communities in this regard, as is referenced on their website. We will be following up on this.

The Waterfall Inukshuk

Out and About on Vancouver Island posted this story about the Inukshuk between kilometre marker 42 and 43 on the road out from Tahsis. Thought I’d post it here for future reference.

Thank you, Maria Fyfe, for sharing about your dad, Tom.

The Waterfall Inukshuk on Head Bay Road, between Gold River and Tahsis BC, is one of those unexpected landmarks that carries far more meaning than most people ever realize. It sits quietly beside the road, rooted in place and shaped by real hands — a small piece of local history wrapped inside a family legacy. People pull over, smile, take a photo, and continue on their way, never knowing the story behind it.

In 2010, road builder Tom Woodward, a contractor for WFP, and his coworker Nate Toohey created the Inukshuk. Upon completion of the road job and using their heavy equipment they placed the rocks up beside the waterfall. The Inukshuk had become a national symbol during the 2010 Olympics, and maybe that’s where the spark came from. Whatever the inspiration, their work transformed a simple roadside curiosity into a tribute — something that feels both personal and communal.
They may have gotten into a little trouble afterward, but the joy it brings has lasted far longer. Tom and Nate would love knowing how many people still stop to admire it.
Tom Woodward passed away recently, and at his funeral, his son spoke about the Inukshuk — how it reflected his father’s spirit, his craftsmanship, his kindness, and his sense of humor. Now, the Inukshuk stands as a reminder of who he was: a good man, a skilled builder, and the best kind of father — the kind who leaves something behind that keeps making people smile.

Grease Trail update

The team at Nootka Reforestation have started installing our new trail markers along the route between Tahsis and Woss Lake! The markers feature artwork by Mowachaht/Muchalaht artist Patrick Amos and will help guide visitors along the trail once completed.

There’s still more work ahead, but it’s exciting to see this project continuing to take shape 🥾
A big thank you to everyone involved, including the hardworking crews, volunteers, artists, and community members helping bring this project to life 🫶

Haircutter coming to Tahsis

Tahsis Community.
The Vanity Vault Salon plans to come up again Wednesday, May 20th to do cuts only, for colour jobs those who have inquired, I will be working through those list separately as I will need to come to your house to be able to wash your hair out in a sink.
I think the easiest way to do this will be . Booking on the hour. So I will time slot starting at 9am and go till 6. Some hair cuts may only take 15 minutes, so I will have a wait list I can work through also.

If that date works for you please contact me at the phone number above to choose a time.

Thank you. I look forward to continuing to serve the community of Tahsis as long as the people need it.
Again I will be offering services out of 165 N Maquinna at Stephanie Olson’s house.

Mayor’s Report to Council May 5 2026

I recently attended the Association of Vancouver Island Coastal Communities AGM in Victoria. While there, I went on a field trip to the Esquimalt Naval Dockyards where we had a short excursion on a trainer vessel and were updated on new enhanced funding for our navy and military in general, given the recent events in the world, a new prime minister and the need for updating our military and a decoupling from the US military, which we have become much too dependent on for our defense. Another highlight was a talk given by Mayor Alto of Victoria about their efforts to house the homeless and offer supports that help integrate them into the community and find them work. It is noticeable that the tent cities in Victoria have disappeared in the last year.

Another highlight for me was a seminar on AI, its applications in governance and data management, its pitfalls and potential issues that need addressing.
