Trail funding announcement
The Province announced a new round of funding today supporting 53 active transportation infrastructure projects in B.C. communities. Additionally, nine communities are receiving funding to create network plans for future active transportation. These communities are benefiting from $24 million in provincial funding.
Included in the announcement is the following project:
- Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation – MMFN Woss Lake Grease Trail and Malaspina Trail renewal
Trail clearing and pre/post trip amenities for the Grease Trail and Malaspina Trail, including signs, benches, picnic tables and washroom facilities.
The trailhead for the MMFN Woss Lake Grease Trail will be located in Tahsis.

Please note only simple returns can be done by the Canada Revenue Volunteer Income Tax Program.
I will take appointments for the followings times.

Sunday 11:00 am till 1:00 pm
If these times don't work for you please call and you can drop off your return and I will complete it within 2 days of dropping it off.
This will be till the middle of April.
After that date we will set up appointments as needed.

Alpine Drive closure

6:30am to 6:30pm March 18th 2025
The detour route will direct traffic to N. Maquinna Drive via Quadra Street or Rogers Street.
Alpine View Road will be temporarily closed to vehicle and pedestrian through-traffic between Quadra Street and Rogers Street while construction is underway. The purpose of this closure is to connect utility services to the new Fire Hall Building. Residents of Alpine View Road will have access to driveways during the road closure, with the exception of the properties directly adjacent to the work zones. These properties will have restricted driveway access for the duration of the closure. It is requested that those residents park street side away from the work zones for the times listed above.
Plan any travelling in advance and expect traffic congestion and delays.

This alert will remain in effect until the road re-opens but is expected to end 6:30pm March 18th 2025. If work does not proceed on the above date, an updated notice will be issued.
Restrictions on bridge to dump
Village crews observed yesterday at least two failed 8” x 10” timber ties on the Perry Bros Bridge which traverses the Tahsis River on the road leading to the Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) Tahsis landfill. As a result, there is movement of the steel braces and girder assembly when heavy equipment is crossing the bridge. This was experienced when the Village loader crossed the bridge yesterday.
As precaution, we strongly recommend that no tandem axle vehicles and trailers use the bridge until the Village’s structural engineers conduct a condition assessment.
We are communicating this advice to crews on the ground today, but we ask for your assistance to ensure that your staff, contractors and sub-contractors are immediately advised. We are considering other risk mitigation measures which will be communicated as soon as possible. We believe the bridge remains safe for use by light duty vehicles.
We understand this directive may impact access to the landfill tomorrow. We will discuss with CSWM other options if it appears the bridge closure will remain in effect for a significant period of time.

First Nation on Vancouver Island alarmed over fish farm firm's ship that hit a rock
The ‘Namgis First Nation on Vancouver Island says it wants a “thorough investigation” into a shipping accident involving a vessel owned by a fish farming company that required help from the Canadian Coast Guard.
The First Nation says the vessel known as the Ronja Islander, owned by fish farming company Grieg Seafood, hit a rock and began taking on water Saturday evening in Tahsis Inlet.
‘Namgis councillor Ernest Alfred says the First Nation learned of the incident from people who heard the ship’s distress call, leading to concerns that the crew planned on dropping equipment or “gear” into the water.
Alfred says the First Nation was “patiently waiting” for the company to make a statement on what happened to the vessel, and he says it highlights the ‘Namgis’ long-standing concerns over open-net fish farming industry practices.
A statement from the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria says it received a call for assistance from a vessel that had “gone aground and was taking on water” on Saturday evening, and the Canadian Coast Guard sent a boat to help and escorted the distressed vessel to nearby Gold River on Vancouver Island.
The Transportation Safety Board says it was “made aware of the incident” and it is still gathering information on what happened, and Grieg Seafood did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
