Tahsis sign ranks number four of 185

 This little sign of ours...

@justindmcelroy of CBC Vancouver did a ranking of 185 of BC's welcome signs, and Tahsis landed at number 4!

"Some 2,500 people lived and worked in Tahsis in its heyday, drawn by the booming timber industry. Today, the town’s population boasts one-tenth its historic numbers (and counting), with residents and visitors alike appreciating the raw nature, rich history, and rare adventure, among other things."

Tahsis Beach Seine event

Join the NSWS this spring as we aid in coast wide efforts to determine where and when juvenile salmon use this valuable habitat.

This project is meant to help the NSWS engage with the community with hands-on learning about the habitat in our local estuary and the species that rely on it, as well as collect spatial and temporal data on out-migrating salmon smolts to satisfy data gaps in the multi-stakeholder WCVI Marine Risk Assessment.

The perfect opportunity to get outside with your family and learn something about your local ecosystems. Meet at West Bay Beach at 9:30am on the above dates.

A Facebook event can be found at https://www.facebook.com/events/675506233672156/?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A[%7B%22mechanism%22%3A%22search_results%22%2C%22surface%22%3A%22search%22%7D]%2C%22ref_notif_type%22%3Anull%7D

Dock announcement from Mayor Martin

 The Village of Tahsis multi-use community pier and dock project proposal has been approved by the federal government under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The grant totals $2,475,547 and is 100% funded. We still have to go through environmental approvals, First Nations consent, provincial approval and final planning decisions as Council, with input from the public, before proceeding. Planning includes:

A main fixed pier, on concrete pilings to be built on the south side from the fixed pier, which will include vehicle and pedestrian access;
The old seaplane ramp to be replaced with a boat ramp at the proper grade, with access float;
Improvements to access, parking, and boat trailer storage;
Hiab crane to be relocated to the new dock;
Float plane docking to be transferred to the new dock;
Support services including fire suppression, potable water, and electrical supply;
The old airplane dock is failing and will be removed to make way for it.
Council to develop a wharf plan that will include a wharfinger. They will be responsible for collecting fees for docking, etc. which will go toward maintenance of the site.
Ownership of the old condemned wharf has been transferred to the Coast Guard, who will be responsible for demolishing it as well as environmental mitigation of the site. They will replace it with a closed dock for their use.
