Tahsis is a remote village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With only 400 residents, we don't have many of the conveniences of larger towns but we do have community spirit and lots to do in our spectacularly wild and beautiful environment.

Groundbreaking ceremony
Many Coast Guard members were in Tahsis for the event. Most came on the ship anchored off the dock by the post office.
The ceremony began with a song of blessing and the sweeping of the cedars to make the place safe for future workers and the people they may rescue.
A good crowd gathered under the tent to hear remarks from: Assistant Commissioner Roger Girouard, Chief Jerry Jack, Chief Mike Maquinna and Mayor Martin Davis who then turned the first shovels of dirt on the site.
The musicians ended with a whale song. The leader joked it reminded him of the times they were fighting fishing and oceans about Luna the whale. The women danced.
Refreshments were served. (Many thanks to Chuck St-Denis for his photos.)

Our objectives are to first identify species using the estuary, inventory the wild/hatchery salmon out migrating from Tahsis and Leiner Rivers, and to provide an educational experience for our community.
Later in the season we'll be continuing to map the Tahsis Estuary to identify and track changes to salmon habitat.
If you are interested in joining our field crew please let me know - the more the merrier!
