Tahsis is a remote village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With only 400 residents, we don't have many of the conveniences of larger towns but we do have community spirit and lots to do in our spectacularly wild and beautiful environment.

Torii gate built
Lawrence is fixing up a house and yard in the townsite. As part of his work, he built a torii gate. This is his explanation why.
"You might be wondering why I choose to make a rather "large" statement in erecting a torii gate. Japanese wood working techniques are of the finest in the world. Their choice of wood, Yellow cedar, is highly regarded as the best .We have lots of it. All the pieces of wood used in this project were salvaged from cut blocks. My goal was to make Japanese people feel welcome in our small town. The west coast of BC has a long shared history with Canadian-Japanese citizens. My small contribution to the interment prisoners. I hope their ancestors will feel welcome."
He would like to see a twinning with a Japanese sister city and a student exchange program. Both good ideas.

The story of the cougar attack
Terry F. and his dog Percy, a female 6-month-old Belgium malinois were walking on the Leiner River trail to the estuary last Monday. "I was walking and when I turned around and looked at her, her head was in a cougar's mouth." The cougar was fifteen feet up a tree when Terry picked up an old piece of log and started hitting the cougar. The puppy fell out of the cougar's mouth and down the river bank. Terry rushed back to town and Brian came back with him with bear spray and a Bowie knife and by that time the puppy was in the water. They rescued her, brought her home, gave her a bath. The conservation officer came and told Terry he had to go to the vet because these bites are usually fatal because of all the infection. Derrick Kasper agreed to take the dog to his vet. The dog underwent surgery and is now back home in Tahsis. Terry was very worried how he would pay but the vet said a group of Tahsis people had got together and already paid the bill. Terry has no idea who they are.

Quilting class
The Tahsis Literacy Society cosponsored a quilting class taught by Anne Hall. Sixteen people participated, most of them locals. The pattern was incredibly hard and even though all used the same pattern, the results came out quite differently.

Family Nature Club
Rebecca McDonald (who you might know as the woman from the farm who sells eggs) posted this.
There's a new free activity in town for kids...and their parents. Family Nature Club is coming to Tahsis this spring, courtesy of the Children's Hub in Gold River.
I'm excited to be a part of this opportunity for families to get outside together and enjoy the amazing natural world that's our backyard!
Our first outing will be this Thursday, so check out the poster below for all the details.
