Malaspina Lake

The Norwegians say it is supposed to be in the 30s later this week and when that happens many people head to Malaspina Lake.

Malaspina is only 12 kms from Tahsis and couldn't be more beautiful.

People go there to fish,

to boat around,

have a birthday party or a campfire,

or to just kick back and relax.

Malaspina is beautiful in summer and winter

and is always a signal that you are almost home.

The Norwegians say....

This phrase is often heard in Tahsis. It refers to an amazingly accurate weather forecasting site from Norway. Not sure how they do it, but their predictions are better than any I've seen. Find the site by clicking on the link in the first box on the right.

Karli's last shift at the Tahsis Library.

Karli, the creator of this blog, worked her last shift at the Tahsis Library on Thursday. A few of the regular patrons dropped in with ice cream and shortbread. Yet another place she will be missed when she moves away.

Mozzarella Cheese Making Workshop

Thanks to a grant from the Tahsis Literacy Society, Stephanie O. and I put on a mozzarella cheese making workshop today and it was a lot of fun!  Everyone who came out successfully made delicious fresh mozzarella, and we enjoyed testing some on a homemade pizza with Epicure pesto mix and some drizzled olive oil, with BC tomatoes and sage, lemon thyme, rosemary and oregano from the CMESS herb garden.

Everyone went home with the supplies to make several more easy 30 minute batches.  Thanks to Raj S. at Tahsis Supermarket for bringing in the milk, and Healthyway Natural Foods in Campbell River for bringing in the rennet.  When we live far from urban centres, it's important to have supportive local businesses who are willing to bring in special orders for us!

The recipe we used was from Barbara Kingsolver's book about local eating: "Animal Vegetable Miracle", available through Vancouver Island Regional Library, along with several other resources on cheese making.  For delicious Epicure spices and all kinds of other great kitchen supplies and ingredients, contact Aubrey S. at Epicure Madness.

If you have an idea for creating a workshop and you think it fits with the mandate of the Tahsis Literacy Society to create, facilitate, and sustain a community of lifelong learners, contact TLS coordinator Louise Guilbert to obtain a grant application at tahsisliteracy@gmail.com.

Thank You! from the Village of Tahsis

Summer in Tahsis

One of the best things about summer in Tahsis is visiting Westview Marina for an ice cream cone.  Here Gareth rocks the quadruple scoop waffle cone!

Tahsis Days Zucchini Car Building and Races

Thanks to Stephanie and Corrine O. for organizing the zucchini decorating and races!  Kids of all ages enjoyed designing and racing their creations!  Thanks to the Village of Tahsis for supplying the produce, and to Tahsis Farm to School program at CMESS for lending the utensils and cutting boards.

Tahsis Days 2017 Parade

This year our parade was short but sweet, here are the vehicles blaring sirens and giving out candy and necklaces this morning, and check out the kids bike parade!

Tahsis Days 2017 Raft Race

It was a beautiful setting for the 2017 Tahsis Days River Rat Raft Race, organized by Brenda Overton and sponsored by Contract Loggers.  Congratulations to the winners, the Tahsis Firefighters!  Well done!  The crowd pelted the rafters with water balloons and even brought the fight up to the top of the bridge, briefly.  Lots of fun!

Janet keeps watch for the rafts
