Tahsis Literacy Society

The Tahsis Literacy Society had it's Annual General Meeting last month, and President Elsie Horvath detailed some of the successes from the past 15 months of the society in her report.  It was such an impressive list for this small but active group, I wanted to share:

At the Christmas and Spring Bazaars, sign up opportunities for upcoming programs and new memberships, lego table and puzzles for the kids, free books, a draw for free computers

Completed funding of the tutor program for students

Canada Council grant sponsored 2 author visits, Yvonne Maximchuck and Paula Wild, potluck dinners and author presentations were well attended.

Brought in Author Laurie Jones for another successful presentation and potluck meal.

Planning a forth author visit in May, with Caroline Woodward

Sponsored a number of Tahsis residents as they took Bronze Medallion lifeguard training.

Sponsored a number of Tahsis residents a they took an Air Brake training course.

Supported several workshops organized and lead by Tahsis residents, including the 2nd annual Ukrainian Easter Egg decoration class with Pat, Photography walk with Karli, Wreath class with Sharon, Card making with Pat, Bowlvember (Bowling and scorekeeping instruction for kids) with Stephanie, Music Boot Camp (guitar lessons for a week straight) with Stephanie.

Brought in musician Gareth Hurwood for several concerts

Supported students traveling to Beijing for an International Student Summer Camp.

Distributed free lego to children during Tahsis Days.  Donated a Coho Books Gift Certificate for the silent auction.

Donated books around our community, at the Outdoor Market on opening day of the Tahsis Artisans' Coop, Esperanza, both bazaars, children and families visiting the library, at Tahsis Springs for visiting children, and many other places.

Purchased day timers for the Kindergarten to Grade 12 students of CMESS.

Supported the Raise a Reader grant used by the Tahsis Recreation Centre in the summer programs.

Supported the Breakfast Club which provides free breakfast to all students of CMESS every school day.

Said goodbye to Coordinator Corinne Vansolkema, who worked tirelessly to support the TLS, and welcomed equally motivated new Coordinator Louise Guilbert.

Each member of the TLS truly lives up to the mission statement:  To create, facilitate and sustain a community of learners."

Thank you and welcome to the returning and new executive of this dynamic Tahsis group!

Understanding EMPowerplus Advanced™

Why is it important to take a multi-vitamin supplement each day?
Multi-vitamins are intended to boost the function of the mind and body to promote an overall healthy lifestyle. As a specially formulated multi-vitamin, EMPowerplus Advanced™ can supplement the nutrients required to promote a more balanced life.

What is EMPowerplus Advanced™
EMPowerplus Advanced™ is a specially formulated multi-vitamin, mineral and amino acid supplement designed to assist in creating a balanced life. The creators of EMPowerplus Advanced™ discovered that the cause of many mood disorders is usually related to nutrient deficiencies or an inability to extract vital nutrients from food. By adding EMPowerplus Advanced™, the body is typically able to establish the right levels of vitamins and minerals required for proper brain function.

Salmon Enhancement

Recently I was invited to see the baby salmon that the Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Society have been nurturing.  From the Tahsis river we have 51 000 Chinook Fry, and from the Lenier River we have 154 000!  Frank, Billy and Don were busy moving the last tankful from the back of the truck to the tanks at the hatchery.

Questions and Feedback

It is very important for community members to make their wishes known to the board, when the board is making decisions about the future of our school building, our budget, and whether or not to keep our 9 day fortnight schedule (longer school days, giving us every other Friday off and a 2 week Spring Break).

If you can't make it to the meeting, please make sure to contact Harmony (Administrative Assistant), or Glyn (Principal) in the school office if you would like your voice heard. (250) 934-6305

Fundraiser Luncheon a Success!

Thanks to Aubrey, the PAC mom and volunteer who organized the Epicure fundraiser for the CMESS  trip to Quebec this month!  Over 30 people came out and supported the school by enjoying a delicious Epicure Inspired Luncheon.  I helped out as the assistant, along with some of the traveling students Liz, Andie, Marion, Gareth and Seth.

Guests were served Wellness Soup, a vegetable mushroom soup flavoured with Epicure Soothing Wellness Tea and Epicure Vegetable Bouillon, featuring such powerhouses as ginger and turmeric.  A rich chicken curry over basmati rice was also served, using Epicure Madras Curry Powder and Chicken Bouillon, alongside a cucumber, carrot, zucchini  and fennel ribbon salad tossed with an Epicure raspberry viniagrette.  Dessert was a frozen creamy berry tart that featured the Summer Berry Fruit Dip Mix, topped with local berries.

Our generous friends and neighbours have once again shown incredible support for our students and the rich learning experiences we value here in Tahsis.  Thanks to all for coming out for a good cause!
