Celtic Nights Cancelled

Unfortunately Gareth is feeling ill and has to cancel the Celtic Nights of Music scheduled for this weekend.

Get well soon, Gareth, and we will see you the next time you visit Tahsis!

CMESS Students in Merida

On the first night there, after 30 hours of planes, buses and automobiles, the 10 travellors from Tahsis cooled down with some gelato at Il Giardino Gelato Merida

Enjoying Spanish lessons, volunteer duties and intense heat, I am sure this amazing group are being excellent Tahsis ambassadors.  Can't wait to hear all the details of the trip when you are back home.

Bokashi Composting Workshop

Tahsis Community Garden Society
invites the community to a
BOKASHI COMPOSTING WORKSHOP

Lead by Terry Fassbender, Organic Master Gardener

Bokashi composting is a safe, quick, and convenient way to compost in your kitchen, garage, or apartment, using a specific group of microorganisms to anaerobically ferment all food waste (including meat and dairy).  Since the process takes place in a closed system insects and smell are controlled.  The process is very fast, with compost usually ready to be integrated into your soil or garden in two weeks.

If you want to build your own composter bring two 5 gallon buckets and one tight-fitting lid.

Tahsis Community Garden Society

Dill in the TCG 2013

Congratulations to the members of the Tahsis Community Garden Society, starting out a new growing season!  There are only one or two beds left available, (call me at 7805 if you want to join) and the garden is pleased to welcome back the gardeners, and a special welcome goes out to all the new members!

Bachelor Buttons in the TCG 2013

At the Spring Meeting, plans were made for all kinds of activity in or for the garden.  Plans were made to prep the greenhouse for another year, and members will also attend a general clean up party to tidy up the winter debris.  As everyone in Tahsis knows, there are always blackberry vines to fight off!

There is an upcoming workshop on Bokashi Composting!  Terry is an O. M. G. (Organic Master Gardener) and we are so happy to welcome his family to our town, and he is now a new director of the Tahsis Community Garden Society.  The other TCGS directors acclaimed this year are Stephanie, Silvie and Janet.  The president is Kim, the vice-president is Jessie, and the secretary/treasurer is me (Karli).

More info coming soon about the upcoming Bokashi Compost Workshop.

Our Tahsis Community Garden Blog has been sitting dormant for quite some time, but there are lots of great older photos there if you want a trip down memory lane.  This summer watch for more updates and photos of our amazing garden!

Stream Keepers Course in Tahsis

"The objective of this course is to provide a science based explanation of stream health. The ecology of streams is explained in modules that all provide basic information on determining the health of a stream. As a Streamkeeper, you will be given the skills necessary to take responsibility for the streams in your community.
This course will be available in Tahsis in May if sufficient interest is shown. This is a two day course that can be scheduled at our convenience. Costs for the course is $30.00 which covers the cost of the manual. More detailed break down of the curriculum and a sign-up sheet are at the Tahsis Rec Centre. Please sign up before April, 15, 2015 as this gives enough time to get text books for everyone.
The invertebrate module alone is priceless to a budding fly fisher!"

Upana Caves Trail Self-Guided Tour

Thanks to Stephanie for bringing my attention to a recent post on Gold River Buzz about caving in our area.  Upana is an easily accessible walk in cave trail.  Click on the graphics below for larger versions:

A few years ago, my husband and son went caving with a group led by the extremely knowledgeable Martin Davis, of Island Karst Research.  Visiting cavers are attracted to our area in part because of the extensive cave networks, and the beautiful karst topography.

For more information on caving near Tahsis check out West Coast Caving, or contact Martin at Island Karst Research.
