Second dose

Island Health’s immunization teams will return to Tahsis to provide second doses in the community, along with first doses for those who have not yet been vaccinated including 12-17 year olds. These second dose clinics will be held in Tahsis before July 1. Once the dates are confirmed, we will notify your community at least 48 hours before we open for booking into these clinics.

Residents who have received notification they are eligible for their second dose are encouraged to wait to book when the clinics take place in Tahsis, or may choose to book earlier into an ongoing clinic in the closest major centre, such as Campbell River.

  • For more information about the provincial registration system or how to get vaccinated for COVID-19 visit the BC government website.
  • For information on Island Health’s Whole Community Clinics visit the Island Health website.
  • For information on Island Health’s ongoing vaccine clinics visit the Island Health website. If you have questions about Island Health’s clinics in your region please contact Dawn Lawrie, Area Director, North Island Immunization Clinics, at Dawn.Lawrie@viha.ca or 250-218-0687.

Tahsis Tourism Marketing Specialist

 Message from Mark Tatchell

I am very pleased to inform you that Tourism Vancouver Island has hired Kira Marshall as the Tahsis Tourism Marketing Specialist.  Kira has considerable experience in the B.C. tourism sector where she has held marketing and social media content positions.  Most recently she was the Event and Content Coordinator at Nootka Marine Adventures.  Kira’s family has roots in the Nootka Sound/Esperanza area so she brings an appreciation and understanding of the history, the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation and the natural wonders to the role.  She is eager to promote Tahsis and the region to potential visitors.  We look forward to welcoming Kira to our team  and introducing her to local and regional tourism businesses.  Kira’s official start date is June 14.  More to come on the details of her remit.

Internet speed question

HERE’S A LETTER I GOT IN RESPONSE TO SENDING IN A READING.

They would like more information. You must set up an account and log in in order to test.

Dear Tahsis Resident,

Thank you for participating in the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) Internet Speed Test Survey earlier this year. The survey results helped validate the actual internet speeds SRD residents are experiencing in rural and remote areas. With the data, we continue to advocate to obtain funding for last mile solutions for the Connected Coast communities. See recent  Provincial announcement – here >.

Many smaller communities in BC are experiencing similar internet funding challenges and there is now a provincial study to help identify and quantify areas in BC where there is a discrepancy between the internet service experienced by residents and the federal data. The SRD is participating in this study and are encouraging residents and businesses to participate by completing multiple internet speed tests through the CIRA Speed Test. Internet users are encouraged to take multiple tests at different times throughout the day. The more tests completed, the more robust the data the researchers will have. This is important for communities like yours where the Federal ISED map indicates your community is being served with minimum internet speeds of 50/10Mbps. Federal funding for last mile connections is tied to the Federal ISED map. To enable a last mile connection from the Connected Coast high speed infrastructure to your home, funding is required.

This provincial study is using the same CIRA Speed Tests used in the SRD Internet Speed Test Survey.
Please complete the CIRA Speed Test above multiple times over the next few weeks.

New procedure for home owner's grant

In the past, homeowners applied for the homeowner's grant when  they paid their taxes at the village office. This has changed and you have to apply on the link below. It says it's best to wait until you have your tax bill with needed information before you apply. If you know a homeowner without internet access, there is a phone number to call for service. 1-888-355-2700.

The Province is now administering the home owner grant. Apply now for your 2021 grant 👉 gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant

Buy Nothing Tahsis, BC

The Buy Nothing Tahsis, BC page is now up and running. https://www.facebook.com/groups/854017515184052
There's a lot of information about the project but for now the important thing is it is a gift community. Everything posted must be given for free. And it involves only the people who live in Tahsis. That includes summer residents.
I've made the first post and ask people to join in.

Registration for second vaccine shot

I called the phone number for registering online for the second vaccine and asked if those of us who got vaccinated as an entire village needed to register. She looked me up and said I was registered already and it would be better not to register again because it messes up the system. If you want to call to check if you’re registered the number is 1-833-838-2323.

Hi Stephanie
I'm still going to CR every Tuesday to pick-up at Thrifty Foods. My pick-up truck is available on Wednesdays and Sundays for other services. Because of Covid I'm parking my trailer.
Happy to be of service,

Alert Ready system test

There will be a test of the "Alert Ready" system across BC on WEDNESDAY MAY 5th at 1:55pm Pacific time.  Note that this is a separate system from the SRD's Connect Rocket. which provides subscribers with local alerts.

Alert Ready is a Canada-wide system that allows government officials in each province and territory to issue public safety alerts through major television and radio broadcasters, as well as compatible wireless devices through "push notifications". To find out if your cellphone is compatible, visit https://www.alertready.ca/wireless/

New information sign

Nootka Reforestation built this new sign. It is regarding the salmon habitat restoration work being done along the Tahsis River and other salmon streams across Nootka Sound. Really nice job.
