Tahsis is a remote village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With only 400 residents, we don't have many of the conveniences of larger towns but we do have community spirit and lots to do in our spectacularly wild and beautiful environment.

Cats
Message from Tabitha at Esperanza:
We are going to be moving to Victoria at the end of the month and need to find a new good home for two of our middle aged cats. (8 year old male, Atticus) and 7 year old female, Jo). Both are fixed, potty trained and mousers. Can you think of anyone looking for cats? It would be best if they stay together.
Esperanza's phone number is in the book.

WFP’s total contribution amounts to nearly three acres of land located within Zeballos’ municipal boundaries and provides an access point to the Community Unity Trial, the company said in a statement.
The steep forest land is ideally suited for the Community Unity Trail as it will allow trail users to enter and leave the planned trail directly from Zeballos, WFP said in the statement.
“We are pleased to extend our long-standing commitment towards supporting recreational opportunities for visitors and residents by providing this land for a multi-use trail,” said Don Demens, President and chief executive officer of WFP.
The Community Unity Trail will become part of a larger trail network, the North Island 1000, that connects small towns across North Vancouver Island. The trail is being developed and constructed by Uniting 4 Communities Society, which consists of representatives from Mowachaht Muchalaht First Nation, the Ehattesaht Chinehkint First Nation and the Villages of Tahsis and Zeballos.
Julie Colborne, U4C Society Board Member and mayor of Zeballos, said that they were excited to have this access point secured as they have been working with the province on making this goal a reality since 2016.
Oil spill update from CTV
Nearly 30 tonnes of oil recovered from leaking wreck off Vancouver Island
VICTORIA -- Emergency responders have recovered nearly 30 tonnes of bunker oil that continues to leak from a historic shipwreck off the west coast of Vancouver Island.
The 150-metre cargo ship MV Schiedyk ran aground and sank in Nootka Sound in January 1968. The wreck lay dormant for decades until last late last year when a two-kilometre oil slick was suddenly visible on the ocean’s surface near Bligh Island, part of an ecologically sensitive marine park.
Multiple pollution response vessels, staffed with personnel from federal, provincial and Indigenous agencies, were dispatched to the area.
Several kilometres of booms were deployed to gather as much of the leaking oil as possible, while a remotely piloted submersible was sent down to the wreck, which is resting upside down in approximately 120 metres of water.
Spill response officials now say the oil is seeping from more than one spot in the ship’s hull at a rate of between three and 13 litres per hour.
As of Monday, responders had recovered approximately 28,670 kilograms – or 28.67 tonnes – of oil and oily debris from the wreck site.
Coast Guard spokesperson Michelle Imbeau says the next step in the spill response plan is to assess the status of the vessel itself. That assessment is expected to proceed at the end of May.
“Once the assessment is complete, we will be have a better understanding of the condition of the ship as well as the types and estimated quantity of fuel onboard,” Imbeau said in an email Wednesday.
The ship still technically belongs to Holland America, but Transport Canada has said the company is not liable for the cleanup cost due to a statue of limitations on the federal Maritime Liability Act.

Community approach to vaccines
Taking a Whole Community Approach
Where communities with a small population (under 4,000 residents) and have challenges with accessibility (ie, accessible only by ferry or air or more than 3 hours ground travel from a hospital) health authorities will take a whole of community approach to immunization. Depending on the size of the community this may result in the entire adult population of the community having the opportunity to be vaccinated during a single health authority visit to the community (in one day or on consecutive days), or over two health authority visits. The following Island Health communities will be vaccinated through a whole community approach and details on when the vaccination clinics will occur will be communicated in the coming days.
Bamfield, Cortes Island, Denman Island, Gabriola Island, Galiano Island, Gold River, Hornby Island, Kyuquot, Lasqueti Island, Mayne Island, North Pender Island, Penelakut, Port Alice, Port Hardy, Port McNeil, Port Renfrew/Jordan River, Quadra Island, Read Island, Saturna Island, Sayward, Sointula, South Pender Island, Tahsis, Thetis Island, Tofino, Ucluelet, Zeballos
For residents over age 80 who live in these communities, if the whole community approach clinic is not scheduled prior to April 12th, Island Health will ensure you have the opportunity to be vaccinated in/close to your community prior to April 12th. Please contact the Island Health call centre during the week that you are eligible for your age group.

Vancouver Island parents to benefit from new child care spaces | |
VICTORIA – Families on Vancouver Island will soon have access to nearly 340 new licensed child care spaces as part of the Province’s ongoing commitment to increasing access to child care through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. “Having access to child care is fundamental for people to be able to take advantage of all the opportunities their communities have to offer,” said Michele Babchuk, MLA for North Island. “We know that having secure child care spaces is vital to the future of Tahsis, just like rural and remote communities everywhere. We also know that when it comes to delivering services people count on, different regions have different needs.” The Childcare BC New Spaces Fund is supporting nine projects to create 336 new licensed child care spaces in Greater Victoria, Sooke, Tahsis and North Saanich. These spaces are part of the fastest creation of child care spaces in B.C.’s history and were part of the September 2020 milestone that marked more than 20,000 new spaces funded throughout the province in just over two years. “Government has been working hard, in collaboration with communities of all sizes, to make sure people can get access to child care—no matter whether they live in Tahsis or Greater Victoria,” Babchuk said. “These investments in new spaces will help give kids a great start in life and level the playing field for young families all around the Island.” New child care spaces are on the way for families in the following communities:
“As with other small, rural and remote communities in B.C., infrastructure and service solutions in Tahsis require a high level of collaboration, creativity and commitment on behalf of local stakeholders and partners – child care is no exception,” said Martin Davis, mayor, Village of Tahsis. “The village, school district and other stakeholders came together to support this project, which will not only save the community’s only daycare, but enhance the service for children and families.” An additional 4,110 spaces, funded through the 2017 Budget Update and the Early Learning and Child Care agreement with the Government of Canada, takes the total number of new, licensed spaces funded in B.C. to more than 24,500 since July 2017. “These new child care spaces for families on Vancouver Island are bringing us one step closer to delivering the quality, affordable and inclusive child care that all B.C. families deserve,” said Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Child Care. “Child care for families is key to B.C.’s economic recovery, and these new spaces will make it easier for parents, especially mothers who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, to return to work or school.” |
